Any advice on the model to go for. Luxury, Premium Luxury etc., and model year? I'm looking to spend up to £25k.
Any known issues with particular models?

I very much like mine.

If you want a 'woofly' V8 the choice will be between the 5.0 N/A or the supercharged 5.0 XFR

Early XFR's 2009/10 can be had for less than £20000.Probably best to go for the facelift model which arrived in 2011. This comes with 8 speeds instead of 6 and (I hate it) auto stop/start.

£25000 will buy a very nice 2012 XFR.......or possibly 2013.

I pay £324 insurance and the trip computer is showing a 'Tunniesque' 22 MPG  over the last 2500 miles.

£550!! At your age?!!  That's horrendous. 

As with all modern cars there's a lot of silly things. Touch sensitive interior light for instance that becomes posessed. Replaced under warranty in mine by the dealer. Cost them ~£350.
Handbrake needs resetting via computer if you replace rear pads etc...

Typically Each step up will cost another £3-4k - Lux/Prem/Port.

Suspension is very firm compared to an Omega.  Even worse on 20"s.  Personally I find them quite boring and figedety to drive at less than 90mph.

The touchscreen control is slow and dim witted and everything is accessed through it. 

6spd gearbox infinitely preferable to the shitty 8spd variant. Start stop cannot be permanently disabled in the ECU according to Jaguar tech and will reactivate every time you turn it on.

Most Jaguar dealers are now offering something called 3+ servicing for cars aged three years and older.


Cost..... £199 for minor service and £275 for a major service. Still more than enough but (if you follow the service manual) only due every 16000 miles.

True.......but soft in comparison to 'ze germans'.

I agree about the rear brake pads. Mine were changed at the first service at 16000 mile

Top two gears on the 8 speed ZF auto are there for reasons of economy and emissions. 8th gear gives almost 50 MPH per 1000 RPM so makes for relaxed and (relatively) economical progress on the motorway. Gearbox is very fast for an old fashioned torque converter unit.


Sluggish touch screen still not perfect but improved on the 2011 facelift.

Not perfect but in XFR guise a real drivers car.

Not to mention the early sat navs were so out of date they didn't show the M25 going all the way round .

We owned a 2004 x-type at one time and the early XF's share the same poxy excuse for a road atlas.

Yep...Mrs Opti briefly owner an X-Type Mondeo in 3.0 SE auto guise. A truly woeful car.

Thanks very much for all the info guys. So preferably a Portfolio model, 2011 onwards, and learn to live with the 8 speed auto. Nope, not interested. Take it or leave it attitude. Having driven to North East London, 120 miles or so, once, many years ago to see a 4.2 XJ6, described as superb, and finding it was the opposite, I am leery at driving long distances to see used cars.

Nope, not interested. Take it or leave it attitude. Having driven to North East London, 120 miles or so, once, many years ago to see a 4.2 XJ6, described as superb, and finding it was the opposite, I am leery at driving long distances to see used cars.

Yep....most dealers seem to come with an inbuilt 'f*ck you' attitude.

Nice car but quite pricey for a 2011 N/A V8 in only premium luxury specification. Low mileage helps but.......
