End of the road
« on: 27 January 2017, 13:08:33 »

Well I've finally given in with my old girl and she is now sadly sat at the side of the house awaiting my decision on what to do with her.

2001 2.6 estate

Question is should I try to sell her on or break her down. It's got to the point where I'm repairing something every other month and know the attendant at the fuel stations Birthday.

I know for a fact she needs two new tyres, new coil packs, new cam covers and seals, tracking, possible steering rack, gearbox fluid/filter change, new brakes and two new centre boxs. Plus rust is starting to take hold and I can't see the point in throwing money at her.

She was Cat c so I know she's not worth much whole so I'm thinking break her down 😞

Worth selling whole if not rusty...

That list is standard Omega maintenance ;)

... and I'll eat my hat if it needs a new steering rack, so you can take that off the list. ;)

Thats the joy of not doing routine maintenance at the regular intervals, it all comes back to bite you in the bum. That then makes a potentially good car not worth the bother. Mine is also a CatC but it still gets routine servicing and runs very well, (for a humble Desmond ::)). Hope i haven,t put the kiss of death on the old gal by saying that. ;D

lol I'd agree with that statement if I didn't do regular maintenance, however as my local vx dealer has a go at me every time I walk in the door for throwing money at the old girl I will disagree with you on this occasion.

It's just that a load of repairs have all fallen at the same time but it's getting more and more all the time and I'm putting it down to age. Plus she's rusting up on wheel arches, tailgate and underneath. Just can't see the point in throwing more money at her.

Really it,s what the car is worth to you, that is, reliability, cost of replacement etc. You stand the chance that the replacement you buy, depending on your budget of course, will need certain items done to it to bring it up to scratch. You pays ya money blah blah blah. :)

The local dealer with shiny alternatives on the forecourt ready to tempt you? ;)

Very true, especially if you know you've looked after a car. Cars offered for sale 2nd hand are unlikely to have had everything attended to recently although the dealer will no doubt talk about giving it a "full service" (which means he'll wash it, in my experience). Every car needs a certain amount spent on it to keep it going. That does eventually become "more than it's worth" but that's irrelevant to me. Filling it up with fuel will eventually double its' value but if you want to drive it you have to fill it. ;)

Funny that, when I used to visit my main dealer in Essex it was normally to crus of "sell it" from the sales department or "what have you got that for still?" Now if it goes in they don't comment, that said I wouldn't trust them as much given the amount of staff they've gone through in the workshop and on the service desk.

Oh I've already replaced her as my brother has his own garage and had a low mileage mondeo in, plus there's only me and my daughter so I decided to downsize. To top it off it has full service history and is in mint condition.

I was considering a signum but as I got family rates it was a steal so I had it. It's not as quiet, not as comfy and not as fast but I don't do the mileage I used to and with it being diesel I will get better economy which will be good on my dwindling bank balance.

Saying all this if I come a good 3.2 I may be tempted back in the future lol
