70 MPH at only 1100 RPM is incredibly leggy gearing even for a low revolution derv lump.

Yes, no chance of breaking your neck noticing when you plant your right foot with that gearing. ;)

I imagine acceleration would be 'glacially slow' if at all. :y

My car is much the same in 8th gear which is similar to an 'old fashioned 'overdrive. No real forward movement despite nearly 500 lb ft of torque.

According to Jaguar the 8 speed ZF auto gives better economy and CO2 figures than the previous 6 speed unit.

About the same as my BMW (when it was working) 70 was comfortably less than 2,000 rpm.

Locking it in 8th basically meant no acceleration, but since the thing would drop 1-3 gears in the blink of an eye it wasn't really a problem. Also, being able to get mid to high 30's on a run in a car with that kind of performance was amazing (probably a touch more if you were masochistic enough to go for eco mode).

When they work, latest gen cars really are a marvel

As I've found out not long after I got it, when I went to over take.....

6th -> 5th = Humm nope not enough go yet.

5th -> 4th = Ah that's better.

So quite often now my overtake method is say 55-65mph in 6th, drop it straight to 4th and it picks up very nicely.  :)

Any further developments, Jimmy?

No not really. By law the finance company have 8 weeks to investigate and decide what they'll do. So they're going to take 8 weeks.

Apparently they've driven it 500miles, changed the battery and the problem hasn't re-occurred. But I can't get out of them in what order they did those things. There's also a case been raised with BMW UK.

Mixed messages still. Frustrating but until the 8 weeks are up I pretty much just have to swallow the platitudes from the customer services people.

My personal view is it's a transparent ploy to get customers into another BMW, to keep the cycle going.

Welcome to diesel, bags of low down torque, no need to spank the arse off the engine to get some power. Super low idle speed on the motorway and 700 miles from a tank of fuel  8)

At 70 MPH in 8th gear my car is ticking over at barely 1400 RPM......on proper fuel. :)

Yeah but that's 8 gears, with twice as many cylinders, with 6 gears and 4 pots on diesel is at 1100, give me 8 gears, some more cylinders and it would be more like 500 rpm  :P

70 MPH at only 1100 RPM is incredibly leggy gearing even for a low revolution derv lump.

I agree....at 70mph my Mondeo is around 1500 revs ... I don't need to change down to overtake at those revs  :y

Plus I can get it in 6th at 50mph and its happy  :) ....tunnie's would be able to that ....

Jaguar the 8 speed ZF auto...
...is horrifically unreliable on the early ones (2011 if memory serves right).

Mind you, I think the early 6 speed ones weren't great either.  Seems ZF's need a year or 2 to refine them ;D

Think I was too low mine is around that too, 6th at 50 is no problem here either through the 50mph average camera road works

There are some that say you shouldn't drive below 1500rpm as it rattles the DMF to pieces... although exactly what the point of a diesel that you can't drive below 1500rpm is quite beyond me.  I suspect they're just idiots personally.  ::)

Yes, I heard that but couldnt make sense of it, I understand not creeping forward with the engine on tickover, but I would have thought that once the clutch is engaged and everythings locked up I dont see how it could damage the DMF

Which is exactly the technique to use in walking pace traffic, a dab of brake now & then saves  the clutch pedal
