Hypothetically speaking of course ;)

The PSA buyout got me thinking, especially the CEOs speech regarding Vauxhall workers having control of their futures by way of efficiency.

Would a relaunched Omega save or kill the company dead? It would be a 2017 spec car with all the safety kit and toys expected in this day and age, with a revamped drivetrain range and still be saloon or estate with unchanged styling.

Also bear in mind that the Luton van contracts may well fall by the wayside once Renault/Nissan have let the dust settle.

Unless something dramatically changed in my financial status, I would never buy a brand new car so thats how I voted.

I think a 2017 Omega could work, bearing in mind passenger room, RWD blah blah, but would seriously have to have much improved MPG by todays standards.

Starting around £35000 for the poverty spec model and then heavily discounted, I think it would do well.

If I held the reins I would make sure it  came only with 6 or 8 or 12 cylinder engines. :)

No arthritic 4 pot lumps, and no diesel option.

A fine handling drivers car. :y

Can I place a deposit? :)

It would also be a great opportunity to iron out all of the regular faults from these models, i.e. improve accessibility, chain cam, a reliable HBV, NO b*stard bolts anywhere andall of the niggling things that we know about - they could always ask US!  :y

We were talking about this earlier.

Car manufacturers make what they think we want. If it has shortcomings like only in front wheel drive, they believe that the punter will still buy as more economical , even bigger diameter alloy wheels and so on.

How hard would it be for example to make a big engined version of the Insignia but rear wheel drive only? I know there would be transmission tunnel issues but....

Buick released a prototype of such a thing at the Detritus show a couple of years ago... Looked like a cross between a Jag XJ and a current Chevrolet Caprice... Gorgeous it was  8)

The government will (already are) make it economically unviable to buy a big, petrol engined car. The price of a new omega would put it in the same price bracket as a beemer or merc, and badge snobbery would kill it stone dead.

Nope, no new cars for me again.

However as a secondhand option yes, because it's resale value will be horrendous as no one will want one because it doesn't say Mercedes, BMW or Audi on it's arse.

Yep, same here. New cars don't represent good value for money, so I wouldn't buy anything new.

Once it's depreciated massively and got past the punitive £40k+ road tax band that it would probably attract, then maybe. :y

Not overly difficult as the Insignia is an AWD platform.....as is the Astra, Corsa etc...

Unchanged styling... for that reason alone I can't see the point in the poll tbh.   :-\

It's hypothetical and everyone here seems to prefer the understated look compared to the Hyundai clone it would end up being if it were penned today...

Well to answer your question based on this hypothesis... of course it would kill the company dead. Why on earth would anybody spend £35k on a 20yr old looking car when it isn't a Defender??  Stupid boy Pike  :D
