Having a friend, up the far North, who is a boat driver, in a roundabout way for HMG, he has already said, the navel boatyards are crown property, so a referendum. Won't change anything with them, there would be a steady draw down to Portsmouth,  making 1500 minimum redundancy,

Portsmouth harbour is already being made deeper, for the arrival of new submarines.

Aircraft carriers  :y

I note "carriers", plural. How many have we actually got ?

2 being built. Was talk of one being mothballed, but think two will enter service now.

Maybe the sensible thing would be a second referendum in a generations time say 10 or 20 years. That way the Scots would have time to digest changes. e.g. Brexit, how the EU fares post Brexit, how the Eurozone fares, how two speed EU works/doesn't.

I know we all have strong views on the subject but at the end of the day it is horribly divisive just the same as Brexit has been.

I said it earlier but there is no way that Spain would OK Scotland joining the EU as it would be a green light for Catalonia and a few other Spanish "countries" to break away. That would be a disaster for Spain as they generate huge amounts of the countries revenues (unlike Scotland). So with that permanent veto there is NO chance of an independent Scotland joining the EU.

This is Nicola Sturgeon we are talking about here. The word "Sensible" just doesn't apply  ::)

What is a shame is that she isn't using her undoubted skills for the good of the Uk. I will stick my neck out and say she is one of the best politicians around.

As well.
Biggest problem is the infastructre isn't in place to fully berth, subs there Yet, if they did the cross channel ferries, and banana boats (90% of bananas for UK, and some of Europe, get landed there) would probably need to re-locate. So the government wouldn't want to spend that amount of money.

The grievance politics of the SNP knows no bounds. This former CND left wing nutter is trying to break the UK apart at the seams, that is her only aim, she hates anything British or English, and Scottish, for that matter, likely stemming from her days as wee eck the CND champion. By God she portrays herself as the antithesis of Margaret Thatcher, however her family done quite well out of Thatcher the milk snatcher's right to buy scheme, buying their lowly Dreghorn council house back in the day.

Further to that her family has roots in....wait for it.....NE England  :o

People here are sick to death listening to her as well. She only got a near victory vote because they canvassed all the poor areas where most of the benefits go, they weren't daft they knew a tory government would cut their benefits and they knew promising to keep all those lovely hand outs would (almost) guarantee them victory.

I hope she gets the referendum date because that will be her effectively naming the day of her political downfall. Until that time just keep asking her what currency we will be using and that will shut her up!

That's genuinely interesting, in a good way.

I know a lot of people in Scotland and do business there. In the run-up to the last referendum I would causually raise the issue talking face-to-face to people I know quite well, and they would just clam-up. Some nasty things went on, and would happen again. There is a rabid mindless nationalistic element at work, blind to reality.

Thank heavens I see no such ambitions here in Wales, well not much.

10am BBC News on R2 led with Spanish Government saying that they would veto any attempt by an independent Scotland to stay in or join the EU. No mention of this since on R2.

Jeremy Vine did a piece on his show and the SNP fella said that he was sure that " a way will be found to keep Scotland in the EU "  That renowned journalist Jeremy Vine didn't challenge this or even bring up the Spanish objection!  In fact the whole piece seemed to assume that Scotland can stay in the EU if they become independent!  ::)

And Sinn Fein are calling for an united Ireland... which, were anyone else suggesting it, would seem almost reasonable.
