I like new words.

Just been reading an item on the turnpike between Scarborough and York.

"In one year it took £1265 mostly from travelling spawer."  Can't find what a spawer is! Anyone know?

The article from Scarborough Evening News then went on to talk about turnpikes avoiding the 400 acre lake at Burtondale from regular flooding. I have left my elderly dad the task of finding where that was/is. Should keep him in trouble as he won't rest till he knows. ;D

Back to bricklaying.

There's a burtondale road in seamer, and s stretch of water not far from it. But, as far as I can see, it has no name.

From this article I reckon Spaw is an old English (or maybe Yorkshire) for Spa. Is Scarborough a Spa town?  :-\

Thus a Travelling Spawer would be someone going to 'take the waters'  :)

EDIT

Wiki answers my own question about Scarborough, and also refers to the Spaw House:y
