Overheating - how hot is still 'safe'?
« on: 04 August 2008, 00:31:22 »

thankfully ive stopped overheating after clearing air from the system a few times (still got a problem somewhere that needs sorting!)

but at what temperature do you draw the line at overheating and pull over?

i run at 95c which i hope is right for the 3L V6

95 degrees is right for the 3.0, you only need to worry if it goes near the red,

I agree, my 3 litres have usually run at between 93ish and 100 degrees  :y

95º is ok/normal for V6 - mine rises to 97-98º if stuck in traffic - fans come on and temp drops back.
Hope this reassures :y

just below midpoint on the gauge is ideal.  If you start to get to 100C on the gauge, thats getting dangerously hot.

The system is under pressure, so you can get away with about 110oC, but if it's sitting at that constantly, you're having issues  :-[

Anything between 90 and 100 should be okay

Agreed. With the correct coolant mixture and a decent expansion tank cap coolant will not boil over until 110-115 degrees C. Many modern cars don't even start the radiator fans until 105 degrees C or so. On cars with more marginal cooling systems I leave them running until they exceed this temperature range because they are more than likely to boil over if stopped than if left running.

Heating to this sort of temperature won't do any harm unless the engine is overheating due to lack of coolant or coolant circulation or you're ragging it. Normally you're simply stuck in traffic.

However, the Omega's cooling system is effective when working properly so there is no excuse for them to be going far above mid-gauge in this climate IMHO.

Also, bear in mind that the gauges are so inaccurate that it's a joke them even having numbers on them. All you need to know is as follows:

Below 1/4 gauge : Engine cold or overcooling if persists after a few miles
1/4 top 3/4 gauge : Normal
above 3/4 gauge and / or warning light on: Something's up.

mine sits just below 1/2 on the guage, will go up a notch above half if im still...

I've seen it just shy of 100 too, but that was after stopping for a few mins, running to the shop, and starting it again when i got back (5 mins) and suffered a bit of pre-ignition when starting it up, but soon cooled down once started driving again.
