Dash Cams
« on: 31 May 2017, 12:41:27 »

My brother had a slight bump when a kid jumped a red light yesterday, He was 99% sure he had a green light but having his dashcam it confirmed he was 100%. :-\

We got chatting and with the outcome of that chat I have started looking round to replace my surrent unit. ::)

I have a transcend 220, good camera, nice screen, records in timed length chunks (not reliable) and has a record button to save the current video (which if there was an accident would you actually remember to push it)

Mine doesn't record GPS, or Speed, not bad at night but will not display reg numbers in low light. :-[

Need one that has good night vision, shook sence record/save, GPS and MPH

The Roadhawk was/is good  but not sure what models people rave about as tech gets better.

Any thoughts as what to look into?  TIA :y

Looks good.....but would a £30 DC also be adequately good?

Boggin 'ell. It'd be cheaper just to crash the damn omega ;).

I'll be getting a mobius cam and wiring it in on a battery saver. So it'll record until it takes the vehicle battery below a certain voltage, at which point the power to the cam is cut so it can't run it flat.

However my priorities are for reasonable quality, discretion and cost. So very different to what you want.

Edited to add: this guy does decent down to earth interviews of lots of dash cams.

i have a very cheap chinese one which i fitted permanently on top of the mirror front but it's not reliable and am thinking or replacing it with a roadrunner which is small and quite cheap.  i don't want one worth more than the car - i would have to keep disconnecting it and putting it in the glovebox.

getting ones with wide enough angle can be difficult.

with my chinese one i have to remember to read aloud number plates so it voice records them.

I`ve run a mobius front & rear for the last 4 years so yes reliable.  :y
The mobius runs a tad hot, but the heat sinks seem to work.

I might give this one a try, streams the Dv  to a smart fone. All the toys inc
I suppose you could call this a second gen. mobius
  https://www.joovuu.com/gb/home/307-joovuu-x.html

I`ve bought dashcam mounts etc. from this seller before.

some night footage, even a compressed youtube upload you can read the reg plate.

Think it`s a mini USB jack onboard, so I can use my Mobius wiring .

just found an unboxing video, couldn`t take it all in, so watched several times  ;)

Got a Nextbase 212. Seems ok, but I cant say I bother with it much now the novelty has worn off. It just records and if I have an incident it will hopefully be useful.

Might have to consider one, I nearly took out a cyclist today. Could tell he was going to do something stupid, headphones in coming to a junction. I turned left into it, of course he did not look but luckily turned left into it too from cycle lane which does cross the road. But then he does an immediate U turn in front of me, without looking. Have to slam on the brakes, I thought I was going to hit him, but the VW stops well. He admitted it was his fault and I carried on, but has made me thing about one of these.

Thing I hate about Nextbase is the screen they have built in, just passing cars you can see the screen on and it annoys me  ;D

Those Joovuu units look better, but I would need someone better skilled at wiring than me to install it!

Should be very straightforward. Can't remember from the pics of your car, but does it have both auto-dim rear mirror and sunroof? If not there should be at least one fused switch live up in the roof of the car already, can just take the live off there and use it to power the cam.

I'll be shoving a post up in the what have you broken on your car today thread in the next month or so ;).

It is an auto-dim mirror, there is a button on it to disable/enable it, but that just makes a faint green light on/off. Because rear windows have a heavy tint the mirror does sod all really. But there is power there I guess  :-\

Yeah, all you really need is a spare wire on the loom to use. Given that a sunroof is an option on the Passat, there will be fused power up there somewhere to use.  :y

I have one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DDpai-HD-1440P-Wifi-Car-DVR-Camera-Video-Recorder-Dash-Cam-G-Sensor-Night-Vision-/172584557539?hash=item282ed75be3:g:8l4AAOSw2gxYz2tL Perfectly useable, decent images, the night vision is reasonable but isn't the best. There's a mini 2 now which i believe is a bit better on the night vision. Uses WIFI so no need for a distracting screen, is small enough to be virtually un-noticable behind your rear view mirror. Has the option to use parking mode if it's on a permanent power supply.

Me personally, I run a BMW Advanced Eye camera in mine.

Front 1080p HD and rear 720p HD with parking mode, gps, audio and permanent event mode recording on a 32gb micro sd card.

Job done. Is a permanent fixture though and is not cheap, but we sell a lot in our place due to the quality.

I like that a lot, very discreet  :y

I was going to buy one of these until the m140i turned out to be total sh!te. If only because it would give BMW no warranty wiggle room on "things like this shouldn't be wired into the car sir"
