First try clearing IE cache and cookies, and reboot router.

Had a similar problem at work yesterday - BT broadband - changed their krappy router for a spare BT krappy router, manually configured and straight onto net!  2nd time we have had a BT router fail!

There were/are some big DNS issues affecting more than 1 ISP yesterday.  People manually configuring DNS IPs need to ensure they enter at least 2, and that they are geographically diverse.  Or let ISP do it via DHCP

Yeh know about this - however put the old router back in this am & guess wot - wouldn't connect.  Swapped it over & connected strtaight back on.  Both manually configured for same DNS servers (one UK, one USA).  Think the orig router breaked!!

What router is it - thought BT were still dishing out Efficient/Siemens to non Hub customers, unless you're really unlucky and get one of those crap 2wire ones?

Shame, as (PSU aside) the 2Mbit flash Efficent and the Siemens are fairly indestructable.  As said, PSU, particularly on the Efficients, is weak though.

i had virgin cable internet at uni... fast but very unreliable.

We were re-booting the cable modem daily, however we did hammer it, sometimes hitting 30gb a day  

There are very few (legal) reasons to be using that sort of bandwidth.  That kind of usage is what has buggered up NTL - its unsustainable.  Actually, thats whats buggered up the Internet everywhere.

More inclined to think that BT's ageing copper wire telephone system doesn't help. I've been with Virgin for 3 years now and my router currently has an up time of 3.5 months, it would have been longer but swmbo pulled the plug out!

A popularist view often touted in many coloumns of certain parts of the press. Wrongly.

Currently, the last mile 'copper' (if you're lucky) networks are not the bottleneck.

Line up has been over 400 days before, showing 'BTs ageing copper network' is not really a problem for stability or speed.

On an aside, I left Virgin just after they bought out NTL as my uptime started to fall below 50% per week..just got fed up with it.  Been with BT over a year now, and only 2 dropouts - only one wasn't immediately fixed with a Homehub reboot (the old white one).

Try contacting your ISP and asking them to help sort your problem - Tech support should at least help with checking thier servers so that you havent been locked out for some reason. Also if thier DNS are down they will tell you how long this state of affairs is expected to last.

Then if they dont satisfy you, consider changing your ISP, and tell them you are going to change unless they buck thier ideas up, unless you are tied into them with a range of other products.
Rule of thumb - wanna know a good isp - check WHICH, check thinkbroadband.com and you cant go wrong with eclipse, Keconnect as the larger ISP's have dreadful support, uptime and speed in comparison. I have been with keconnect and they have been fine for a couple of years. I have heard tesco and waitrose are good ! I have been with Pipex, BT, Demon, AOL and Orange in the past and i think they are too big to care about lil ol me, so you should compare what others have said before making your choice

trouble with sites such as adslguide or whatever they call themselves this week is they aren't really big enough to get a good guide for ISPs.  Plus, as people tend to join such sites due to problems, the bigger ISPs seem to be worse than they are.


As all ISPs are going through a big DNS upgrade due to a massive, very serious flaw with DNS.  Also, as this flaw is now public, the script kiddies are hammering every DNS server out there, so the wise ISPs have spent the last 3 months throwing in more DNS capacity - only the big ones can afford to do this.
