My 21 year old has set his heart on one now his insurance premium is coming down,

Has anyone on here ever owned one , or know any problems we should look for?

No, sorry. Audi's are tough as old boots. As with Mercs, BMW's, Saabs, Volvos, they do'nt go wrong vey often but can be pricey when they do. Plenty of german/swedish spares sites to soften the blow.
   Insurance for a young'un may be pricey but he shows a good taste in motors. I rate Audis myself, cracking motors.

mate had an a4 Quatro from new, sold it with 170k on it to a mate and its stall going strong. NOTHING went wrong with it, nothing. Cant say the same for vw tho. Very similar and share alot of parts. Both Golf and polo playing up. Sensors and dash lights mostly.

not sure if you could call this a problem, but servicing costs are financial rape

Good cars generally, the build quality is excellent and most of the engines are very strong.

1.9tdi is a bit agricultural and underpowered.
2.0tdi is much better and quick.
I do not agree with the stupdily long oil change intervals though. If it was mine I would do an oil and filter change twice a year regardless.

Petrol engines are well proven and strong, but the 1.8 turbo has a tendancy to be abused.

I tested the 2.0 tdi last week and was impressed by the drive.

Only thing to remember, standard equipment on Audis is pitiful!
Get a higher specced 2.0 tdi and he should be fine.

Unless he is after a nearly new one, in which case he should try the Volvo C30. I did and now I have ordered one as my company car.

Never had a problem with my old one.  Only issues have already been stated - servicing and repair costs.

Small petrol engines can be thirsty and a little underpowered.  Go for the diesel or 1.8 turbo

me too, i really wanted an A8 but could only afford a Miggy

My brother gave me a lift in one had as a company car. Was about 8 years ago now but the 1.8 turbo flew. First time i ever noticed being pushed into the seat under accelleration. That was without it being pushed. I personally prefer then later shape but at the end of the day ots down to your budget & finding a well looked after one

Generally a good car, but lots of different engines.  What are you looking at specifically?  I would defo suggest the 2002ish with the newer climate panel and stereo over the earlier version if you can afford it.  If looking at the current model then PD140 is only Diesel you want, 1.6L is decent, and Turbo petrols are rapid.

if fuel cost ia not an issue 1.8 turbo is the option..

And to add S3 even old models are really fast and tough with forged pistons ..Easy to mod.. Of course repairs  are also costly..
