New Motherboard needed
« on: 10 August 2008, 12:25:17 »

I know a few OOF members spend ages trawling through specs of PC components, so was after a favour, as I am too busy to do so myself presently  :'(

I'm after a motherboard, meeting following spec:
Core2 Duo compatible
mATX format, with a specific slot layout, 16x PCI-e - doesn't matter - PCI-e - PCI
At least 5.1 integrated audio, with both optical and copper SPD/IF out
1 x SATA
1 x IDE
4 x Front panel USB
1 x Front panel Firewire
Gigabit NIC (ideally, but 100Mb will do)

Post up any contenders!

XFX do a nice range of motherboards, what is your budget?

Budget not a problem, but no need to pay extra for things I don't need, such as raid, SLI and so on.

Ideally, a heatsink, rather than fans on Northbridge/MCH.

Overclocking will not be used at all, stability is crucial.

I have been running an XFX MB for almost 2 years and not had an issue but it is SLI but if you have a PCIe then you can run it with 1 card anyway.

here is a list of shops that stock them just see what you like,
Asus are also good as well as MSI

oh and what memory I assume DDR2?

I would never run Asus boards, too unstable.

I generally would only use Intel branded boards, but struggling to find an Intel that matches my needs.

Just had a look myself, there are plenty that meet your spec, but not with that specific slot layout  :'(

Presumably you have already bought the case for it, hence the need for the specific layout?

PM sent, btw.

Yes, existing case, needs a bit more grunt than its existing P4 can provide.

Gigabyte - like most of their stuff doesn't follow ATX slot layout, missing the first slot, with th others over one.

MSI - link not working

Intel - need to check more, but I think I have seen that one before and it doesn't have SPD/IF

Foxconn - will investigate further. Slightly concerned with foxconn reliability, but not the worse :y

Rather than spending all this time trying to find a board that has the specific layout, why not simply change the case??

You are looking for a board that seems to be very difficult to obtain so common sense says change the case and you will find a board that suits less specific needs.

Changing the case is not an option ;)
