Not wishing to second guess the admin/moderator team, but I`d imagine your 'religious question' post has (perhaps) raised some legal, moral or decency issues that need group-discussion with regards to forum posting policies. ;)

I'm about as un-PC as you can get, and find very little offensive (apart from my Wii calling me a 43yr old fat sod ::)), but based on the fact some people may find your thread offensive, the admins will discuss behind closed doors...

There is a possibility that a proportion of members may find the thread deeply offensive.

Yes, and mildly amusing.

By its nature, following a religion means you deep and strong views on your beliefs, and what some may consider a harmless joke, may be a hurtful comment about a deeply held belief that may be distressing or offensive.

that makes 2 of us. but reading through some past topics we have got  sexism, mild racism, homophobia. but the minute religion is mentioned the shit hits the fan. not having a go or being funny. just stating fact.

By its nature, Faith means you hold strong beliefs, and often fairly uncompromising, hence why Religious jokes, Religious taunts, and Religious differences can cause tensions.

My personal views don't come in to it, but I have to consider the membership as a whole, and in this case took the decision to temporarily pull the thread until the administrators decide which side of the line it falls.
