I have watched about 30 mins of the Olympics so far this year - but that is long enough to realise that we will never pull it off like the Chinese have  :(

So in my books, thats 8 billion quid of tax payers money down the pooper

I disagree with you all I am afraid :(

I have watched loads of the Olympics and have enjoyed every minute spurring on Team GB :y

Most of the winning Countries pump millions on training there athletes, who when they win uplift their whole Country.. instead what we have is lottery funding and excellent athletes who also work for a living... If our athletes had the backing that other countries have we would win far more which in turn would lift our Country to a high....

As for 2012, I reckon it will be brilliant :y :y

2012 will be a disaster, as it will done in a half baked way by a committee.

Look at the Dome - good idea, shockingly badly implemented, and way over budget.

LK, Fair point - I can see where you are coming from with that sentiment.

However, given the current state of the economy is it not a little unfortunate in its timing? I wouldn't want it to be beneficial in many ways but also severly detrimental in others... :-/

This is all that worries me really - I shall probably go and watch some and really enjoy it when it is here!

i agree whole heartedly lk. just think it's a waste of money when we  have most of the facilities needed already up and running in this country. why build them all over again.

I enjoy the Olympics; to see humans at their physical peak, having spent years of their lives in training and preparation for that 'one' competitive moment; having the chance to compete against the best in the world, in the hope of being proclaimed 'Olympic Champion'.
I marvel at their commitment and dedication and I`m in total awe of their prowess and abilities.
Politics (National or Nationalistic) has NO place in sport whatsoever!.....just watch, enjoy and marvel at what humans can achieve. :y

it's not politics. it's economics.  we've excellent world class venues in this country. just dont understand why we have to spend over 8 billion building a new set in london.

Did anyone see the Russian and Georgian women hugging? I thought that was brilliant... these games bring countries together

No matter what state the Country is in we are far better off than plenty of others.
If that money was not going to be spent on the 2012 Olympics it would probably be wasted, what better way then is there to lift us all!!!!

The Economy...You know most of us see it everyday, people moan and groan about this country and how crap it is, that they have no money and the whole world owe them.... and yet they will go down the pub a few nights a week with fags in there pocket, brand new car on the drive on tick...... >:(
