Insurance Brokers
« on: 16 August 2008, 14:51:20 »

After watching Road Wars on TV where a woman had an unreturned cancelled insurance certificate (apparently a dodge well known to the Police) it brought to mind the time I changed my Carlton to an Omega about 4 yrs. ago. I was insured with Axa, by the local High Street broker. There was about 4 months insurance to go, so I expected about 70 quid back. I paid for 12 months insurance with a different insurer, received a new certificate, surrendered the old one for the broker to claim a rebate for me. A week later I called in the brokers office to enquire about the rebate and was told that Axa had no record of insurance in my name, and that the brokers had changed hands. This means that not only did I lose my rebate but I had been driving uninsured for 8 months.
My question now is, what if I had an accident in that period involving the Police ? Would I have had a conviction for uninsured driving as well as the costs of repairs.
Needless to say I now insure online directly with an insurance company.

That situation happens less and less now due to online companies.  The smaller one man band brokerages are now getting few and far between.

In the circumstances you describe, I would say that you would have been uninsured.  And able to persue the defunct broker for fraud etc....
