Thanks for all your help, guys, ( :y) but I think I'll jack this in (after 5 hours!).

*The BIOS recognises the new Sata drive.
*Have formatted the new drive using Win 2K
*Have tried to get the BIOS to boot from both floppy and CD-ROM.
*Have now got the F6 driver on diskette (thanks TB), but of course until XP starts and asks for it, it's no use.
*On start-up it actually says "Bootable CD-ROM is found"

BUT

I always get the same message: "Reboot and select Boot device or insert boot media in slected boot device and press a key"

Always, no matter what I try. >:(

Think I'll stick with Win2K Pro and the old IDE disks. Much simpler.

first be sure from the bios CD-ROM is the first one in boot order..

second when it displays bootable CD-ROM found immediately press

enter to boot XP from CD

if you cant reach the blue screen theres something wrong..

if XP continues to load drivers and displays the message press F6 for additional drivers and if you have SCSI type or another disk connected to a controller which XP does not recognise you need to give this with F6..

Hi Cem,

Just tried that. The CD drive spins up, but I get the same message as before. I think the drive may be fubared, so I'm off to Maplins in the morning to get new one.  :y

It IS easier to build a cupboard!

Incidentally, yesterday I recycled all the colorfill I had lying around. I mean, it just SO yesterday's material!!

Remember, purple is the new orange. (Something like that, anyway!)

 ;) ;D

last experience with the job PC (scsi system)

had a similiar problem...

idiot CD-rom..was foobar..changed the CD-rom and problem solved..

hope this helps :-/

WELL DONE, CEM!  :y :y :y

Went and bought a new Samsung DVD/CD unit and bingo, XP loaded with ease!

Only problem I have now is resetting/reloading everything. My bookmarks are in a sub-directory of Documents and Settings but it's hidden and, try as I might, I can't get to it!

Oh well, I'll have another fiddle.  ;)
