Trolly jacks, crap or what?
« on: 20 August 2008, 03:20:56 »

they go up in a radious so they pull the car over when the stupidly small wheels dig into your drive, which they have done several times making a right mess. The one i have has to short a reach making axle stands a pain/too tall. I know, i need a bigger jack, seen £40 one in halfords 2.5ton and reaches higher than the stands on the shelf next to them.
But why cant somebody build a locking bottle jack into an axle stand thats low enough to get under a car with a flat plate on the bottom so it saves the drive?
Ps are ramps any good. Not for wheel off work obviously but do they clear the body of the car? Do they slide away when you drive up to them unless they also dig into the drive?

think you're asking the impossible there Gsxr, what you need is one of those air bag thingies i saw on 'tommorows world' years ago, conect up to exhaust, rev engine and bag inflates lifting car :y

seriously i know what you mean (changed my back box last night) the arc thing is a pain in the 4rse, my drive is only wide enough for a car so when i lower the jacks the saddle stay put on car and the jack pivots back digging the tiny back wheels into the lawn (and next doors ::))

Yeah, thought about that, it would give i bit more lift as well to get the stands under, but the clearance from the car is a bit tight already.
It would have to be thin metal plate of some sort.
I have a sh!t jack dont i !?!

interested in bottle jack v trolly debate....
Well to me, i've never used a bottle jack by the way, they are to tall and unstable for car use. But if they could be made low enough and centred in an axle stand i think they would be perfect. Seem to remember a 2 or 3 stage bottle jack being used by some print engineers to move a machine once, it was very low but as hereford says, prob not pos.

You'll find that the front skirt panels on most modern saloons are to near to the ground to allow the use of ramps. A way around the problem of the ramps sliding is to wrap a hessian sack or strong rag around the bottom rung of the ramp then drive over the sack the weight of the wheels on the sack holds the ramps in place and prevents them from sliding forwards :y

trolly jacks are unstable and should only be used to put the car on axle stands! they can and do fail and if your undereah the car when it fails then its a trip in an ambulance if your lucky

i use axle stands as my tyres are to wide for ramps :(

btw those autoxs from aldi trolley jacks are lethal but would you trust £15 worth of junk!

I've got an RAC-branded 2 tonne trolley jack (made in China, cheaply hand painted in RAC colours) that struggles with both the weight of the car and also getting enough height to get the axle stand in place   >:(
