I have one of the above it worked great on my omega and the wife's Nissan. But when I plug it into my BMW x3 it powers up but won't connect. I take it that means it won't work or can I get some kind of a adapter.

What age is the X3?,if diesel  powered then 2005 before that scanner will work

It should read that ok,check that the fuse to the Data link connector isn't popped

Does the tool still read other cars? It's easy to bend the pins on the plug so the don't go in the car's socket.
