A quick look on ebay shows the seal for £3.50 and a new cap for £25.

Strange thing though, even though I've cleaned it up a couple of times, there was no sign of oil coming from the cap, until today when I properly ragged it up the hill.  :-\

I cleaned it up at the top and pulled the dipstick out a little so it could vent, before I ragged it back down the hill, and it was still leaking. I'll still check the breather tomorrow though.  :y

The cams are still flinging 710 about regardless of the breathers
at £3.50 ,I'd replace the seal

Ah yes....  ::)  :-[  ;D

I think so.  There's a breather pipe which goes from the cam cover into a box, handily tucked behind the intake, fuel rail and injector loom.  Can't see a valve of any type.  I'll remove the breather pipe later and investigate further.  :y

I'm a little reluctant to seal up the filler cap though in case something else goes which is more involved, but given it still leaked with the dip stick loosened....  :-\

clicky
blown up part diagrams show the breather set up
but only you know what year  :D
some diagrams showing a 710 separator with PCV valve about £30 ,obviously maybe cheaper elsewhere  :y
select the correct year and engine will save you looking in the wind and rain ,if you have the same weather as here  ;D
that said, the 710 cap should never leak 710 ,so the seal is poor
maybe due to duff PCV ,or just worn

Sorry it's a 2004 MY/Phase 2 V70.  :)  Can't see the D5 on that site Dave?  :-\

So I've been out and had another look and as well as the pipe from the crank case to the oil trap/box already mentioned, there's a second pipe which goes from the box to the inlet just before the turbo at the back of the engine.  There is what appears to be a sensor or valve with an electrical connection, which I assume is the PCV?

quick google points to 2004 ph2 is changeover year for M/Y 2005
D5 Dirty diesel 5 cylinders  :P

this gubbins clicky  :-\

PCV is part of the trap ,just a 1 way valve with membrane diaphragm
the electrical sensor or valve may be a solenoid  :-\

plenty of youtube vids on how to test volvo PCV ,just select which annoying accent or language  :D ;D

I've been out and come back clutching some jubilee clips, so will strip it down tomorrow and clean it all and then see what's what.  :y

The electrical bit is to do with a heater element to stop freezing cold oil air mix going into the turbo inlet.

I would just try the oil cap seal first as there is always a fair bit of blowby with high compression diesels and the fact that the dipstick didn’t blow out leads me to think it could well just be the seal.if it’s the trap type system it can be a bit of a job to do properly and pipes plastic bits etc would most likely get broken too. I believe the whole lot can be bought for about £150. But I would try just the seal as why fix it if it ain’t broke :y.
293062977946. That’s the item number for the seal.
