Free trade deal
« on: 17 December 2019, 18:12:13 »

Anyone got a view on how the trade deal with our European friends is going to pan out?

Free trade like we have now? It would make sense especially for Germany and Spain. Similarly for Ireland. It will keep things sweet.

However surely there will be caveats  to cover scenarios like products Britain creates in the future cheaper as a result of trade deals struck elsewhere.  A couple of poor made up examples:

Cars made with cheap but  quality Chinese steel.

Chicken pies made with cheap chlorine washed chicken from our USA friends.

Quite possibly but I should have said then sold on to an EU country that uses more expensive steel or more expensive chicken because of their trade rules.

European countries are allowed to buy Chinese steel and US chicken meat.  Obviously not with a tariff free arrangement, but they won't be able to do that through the UK either without paying tariffs.

I skeptical that we'd get free trade without free movement of people. Historically, the four freedoms (movement of goods, services, capital and people) have always been linked, it's a central EU philosophy and one I can't see them moving on just for us. But I have been wrong before....

Doubtless someone will be along in a minute to explain that it will all be fine and I should stop talking the UK down.  :)

All the other countries around the world who trade with them don't have to accept their four freedoms, so why should we ?
The four freedoms are for member states. We wont be one after next month.

Manfred Weber MEP the leader of the European Peoples Party which is the largest group in the EU Parliament said yesterday that the EPP will vote against any deal with the UK that dosn't require the UK to follow the rules of the Single Market.  So they will still try to retain control over our economy and it will be interesting to see how that pans out over the next 12 months!  ::)

Talking of the EPP, Donald Tusk was elected (EU style as there were no other candidates) as their new president the other day, which is nice for him....  :)

I hope they do vote against it, then we're off with no deal.  :)

Fixed that for you Uncle STEMO. We'll have still signed up to the Withdrawal Agreement, so the £39 billion will still be due along with all the other provisions that are in it!  ::)

Not after December 2020.

As I understand it, if the Withdrawal Agreement is ratified by Parliament and the EU Parliament, and comes into force on January 31st 2020, then that Treaty applies whatever happens next.  :P

However... Guy Verhofstadt has been grandstanding in the EU Parliament today, telling the world that the WA will be voted down by the EU Parliament if Boris doesn't guarantee all the EU citizens rights in the UK.  ::)  Although to be honest I thought that the citizens rights thing was all sorted in the WA.  :-\

Anyway there's hope yet!  :)

we need another quote to follow that one.
