just watched a recording of DOGFIGHTS......
« on: 06 September 2008, 09:33:28 »

it was the one with the p51 mustangs on it, (i think they are beautiful machines) boy their bravery and dedication, one pilot who got to a formation of bombers alone -encountered 30+ attacking german fighters and went straight for them!! he shot down the leader with some amazing flying skills and fended off the rest untill support arrived, with only one bomber damaged !!!
the g's that they pulled would knock any normal person out cold outstanding feats...... ;)

A preserved Mustang regularly flies through the skies over Ashford during the summer with the owner putting it through its paces and practicing for the various air shows he attends.

These Merlin V-1650 Rolls-Royce Merlin engined aircraft (originally fitted with an Alison V1710 engine) were used by the US 8th Army Air Corp after their commanders eventually agreed to use them to escort their B17 daylight bomber formations over Europe.

Thunderbolts were originally used as escorting aircraft, but even with drop tanks they did not have suficient range to escort the B17's to the German borders, resulting in huge losses as the bombers fell pray to Luftwaffer fighter attack.  It was only after the 14th October 1943, known as 'Black Thursday' when the 8th Army Air Corp lost a further 60 aircraft in just one raid, that the Mustang was used as the escorting fighter throughout the bombing run, and this immediately greatly reduced the losses. From then on the P51 was known by the US pilots as their "little friend". ;)

A wonderful aeroplane, it is second only to the Spitfire in pure British emotional terms to me, but arguably in performance terms the best aircraft of World War II but only once powered by the British Merlin engine!! :-* :-* :y

I saw most of those Dogfight programmes, bl**dy brilliant!

Did you see the one where the yank pilot ran out of bullets and decided to cut the Japs tail off with he's prop. and bail out, that takes some nerve!

Yes Lizzie the Mustang only became a great fighter after they let us put the Merlin in it as you say originally fitted with an Alison engine but suffered in a climb and was to thirsty.

The same sort of thing happened with the carrier born Corsair which there pilots kept crashing on landing due IIRC to the wing configuration resulting in the killing of more pilots than in combat! and so they gave up until we came along and showed them how to land it.

Thanks Cem, that is good to know.  Perhaps unusually for a women, I have been interested in aircraft.....steam engines......ships.....cars (!!) ever since I was about four years of age :D ;)  Probably due to my father being in the Royal Navy (for 26 years) and constantly talking about, and showing me, everything about these subject areas.

Had my first car ride in a A35 in 1958, travelled for the first time on a named steam hauled train, the 'Torbay Express' in 1960, and flew for my second time in a DC6 in 1962, with a third time in 1964 in a Royal Transport Command Comet 4B, with many close encounters with Shackelton's, Gannett's, Vulcan's, Valiant's, Victor's, Lightnings, Vampires, Canberras, Javilins, Buckaneers, and many others I have forgotten. :y Also been around an American B52 with a friend who was a retired US Air Force Colonel who used to fly them and got me onto the Albuquerque Air Base in New Mexico, USA.

Oh, and yes went for my first sea cruise in my fathers then HM ship the brand new Guided Missle Destroyer HMS Fife in 1966, after visiting many British and American warships (loved the American sailors  :-* :-*) in the meantime.

During the 1966 cruise I had my only experience of seeing the Cunnard liner RMS Queen Mary on one of her last voyages.

Then me, Daddies girl, has walked the First World War battlefields of Flanders and Northern France picking up ordnance oussing out of the mud.

God, the experiences and memories I have had, and I am only 25!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Are you interested in railways Cem and in particular steam engines?

I understand that four Stanier 2-8-0 8F's engines, located somewhere in Turkey with another two, are due to be brought back to the UK if negotiations with Turkish State Railways are successful.  Do you know anything about this?   Have you any pictures you can post? ;)

Sorry in advance if all this bores you Cem, but I love writting and talking about transport (or anything else for that matter) but I hope that explains why I seem to know a few facts!! ;D ;D ;D ;)
