My long term average in the 3L is 27mpg according to MID, which I'm not too unhappy about.  Mixed driving.  I know it will get mid thities on a long run.

James, did you still have to pay 85 quid even though they just did the tracking?  I thought they charged per adjustment needed..?

What rubber did you go for?

I did a long run earlier in the year mainly motorway and traveling at mid 80s I averaged 25mpg on filling on LPG

Although the ones that came off were ok - (certainly legal!) just too worn on the edge!

Very odd though - it is most definately doing about 6mpg more than it was before.



Even if if didn't need much adjustment, it is clearly well worth the money if it helps economy that much!!

Thinking back, (on some tasks with assistance of others) have done a huge amount on this car - including replacing the sticky stat, badly setup cambelt kit, crap gearbox, so on so forth.

When I bought this car it said 22/24mpg on a 70mph run. I am now easily clearing 35mpg at those speeds.

While I am not totally there, it does feel good to have that level of progress in a month

Probably a combination of all the little things you've done .. just proves that a well maintained car runs better and more efficiently  

At a steady 60 today on the M40 (believe it or not, that is how I usually drive!) it was reading 39mpg average. Whilst I don't believe that of a V6, it is better than the 22 it was displaying when I bought it.

I still argue that I would rather get 35mpg out of a petrol V6, - than 41mpg out of a TD. I think what I would save in runing costs, (given diesel is 10p a litre more) by having a TD - I would soon save in being able to maintain the V6 myself.

The big question for me is LPG. Thing is, most of my driving is long distance - and if I can get close to 35mpg on petrol this way - it does make me wonder if LPG is viable. The most my 2.0 16V LPG ever did on a run was 26mpg.....   :-/

Difference being the oil burner will return much more driving the way you claim - Cruising up the motorway to Mr DTM's last year at 70mph, trip + range on MID was over 800miles for that tank!  OBviously plummeted when I hit the A46

For info, JamesV6CDX, my MV6 averages between 24 and 26mpg over the period of a few months.  My commute is not great for good mpg (busy, twisty A roads, varying speeds between 30 and 45mph most of the way), and from what you have said, we have very different driving styles...

Knowing the journies I do, mid twenties out of a big 3.0 car, and not being ashamed to unleash it frequently, is bloody good imho...

does the £85 WIM job include wheel balancing?

Wheel balancing is part of the process of a tyre change though i'm sure WIM would be happy enough to check the balance of your wheels even if you didn't have new boots.

They do wheel balancing even if you have old boots.  The tyres on my fronts were apparently new but turned out the balancing was over 25g - 50g out on both.  Worth having done imho

The charge for the tyres was £50 per tyre, fully fitted. Competitive enough.

I was under the impression it was £70 to check the values, + extra for adjustments, hence the £85 cost to set the front tracking?

Seems reasonable enough for a reasonable job of getting the tracking right

I believe Tony's knowledge of all things geometry related far exceeds 99.99% of anyone elses.

I wouldn't take my car anywhere else for geometry checks / issues and to be honest the labour rates and prices of tyres are very good.

Look at it this way. Although £85 isn't the cheapest considering the only adjustment was the tracking - at the end of the day, when you think about it, I still think it was worth it.

For the simple reason Tony know's his stuff, and was able to reassure me that all the other angles his machine measured were in limits

I thought it was £70.50 for the check, and a charge for the adjustment. In this case I needed the tracking only adjusted - so assumed the extra £14.50 was for this adjustment - making the total £85?

Seemed correct at the time?
