WIM Today - results.
« on: 12 September 2008, 22:18:44 »

Visited Wim today.

Opted for full alignment - £85 can't be too bad.

The only bugger of it was, everything was already in limits, apart from the tracking, which was easily adjusted - no other adjustments were needed, so the car didn't need to be up in the air for long!

I must say, the Centre is very impressive indeed and they are all nice chaps :y

Just to add - it does drive better after tracking set right.

Out of interest, does having the tracking right make a huge difference to economy (if the car isn't "fighting" itself)... I noticed considerably more MPG on the motorway coming back! :-?

Tyre scrub will dent MPG, but not sure by how much, TBH..

Did you put new boots on as well ??? seem to recall them being mentioned ??

If you did .. just remember, new boots have a larger diameter, so giving a greater circumference, so for each revolution of the wheel you will travel further ... ergo ... more miles per gallon...  :D :D :D :D

(well it's a nice theory anyway !!!!  )

No way, really? Have you changed the wishbones or any of that stuff?

Wishbones changed and camber set with a spirit level. :y

Good job it wasn't out actually, because we left it on the limits of adjustment IIRC.

If it's the MID mpg, then it'd probably be worse - as it wouldn't know you've travelled further - it only counts wheel revolutions!  New tyres might be lower rolling resistance - which might account for some improvement, though..?

That would depend if the MID is calibrated on new boots or old though wouldn't it ....  :) and what pressures the tyres are at ...  :)

Yes Nige, I did have new boots ;)

Although the ones that came off were ok - (certainly legal!) just too worn on the edge!

Very odd though - it is most definately doing about 6mpg more than it was before.

Even if if didn't need much adjustment, it is clearly well worth the money if it helps economy that much!!

Thinking back, (on some tasks with assistance of others) have done a huge amount on this car - including replacing the sticky stat, badly setup cambelt kit, crap gearbox, so on so forth.

When I bought this car it said 22/24mpg on a 70mph run. I am now easily clearing 35mpg at those speeds.

While I am not totally there, it does feel good to have that level of progress in a month :)

Probably a combination of all the little things you've done .. just proves that a well maintained car runs better and more efficiently  :y :y

At a steady 60 today on the M40 (believe it or not, that is how I usually drive!) it was reading 39mpg average. Whilst I don't believe that of a V6, it is better than the 22 it was displaying when I bought it.

I still argue that I would rather get 35mpg out of a petrol V6, - than 41mpg out of a TD. I think what I would save in runing costs, (given diesel is 10p a litre more) by having a TD - I would soon save in being able to maintain the V6 myself.

The big question for me is LPG. Thing is, most of my driving is long distance - and if I can get close to 35mpg on petrol this way - it does make me wonder if LPG is viable. The most my 2.0 16V LPG ever did on a run was 26mpg.....   :-/

A V6 might do 35 MPG on a run (I have had my MID reading 38 AVG after 100 miles at 60) but it'll plummet as soon as you come to any kind of junction, or get bored and floor it.

My mixture of "A" roads and urban driving day to day returned 27MPG on petrol, and is doing about 23 on LPG. I haven't done a long run on LPG yet. :-/

LPG really depends what your payback time will be, TBH.
