Thanks for the heads-up. As it's a quiet Sunday morning I have one for you:

I have noticed the following has crept into the online MOT tester's manual as reasons for failure on registration plates for cars registered after Sep 2001:

a. not displaying the name and postcode of the supplying outlet
b. not displaying a BSAU145d marking

Are cars seriously going to be failed for not displaying the name and postcode of the supplier? I put new plates on mine fairly recently, and am pretty sure there's no name and postcode on them despite them being obtained from a reputable motor factors and showing BSAU145d.

Surely if the plates visually comply with the requirements (don't get me wrong, chavvy fonts and mis-spaced plates I detest) that's enough?

OK, this is turning into more of a rant than a technical question, for which I appologise, but I'd welcome your view on it.

Just another of the Governments ill thought out plans to try to prevent cloning etc. You just buy your plates online now from Ireland.

And ...... I'd like to know why you can't buy plates with the 'font' that we had before Sep 01, even when it's going on a pre Sept 01 car.

Yep like to know myself as I have just purchased a pair, very legal fonts and spacing just has the Vauxhall badge on the left instead of say a euro or country badge no other names numbers etc.......would this pass MOT, it is on a pre 2001 car.

Crazy though it may seem , all these things should fail the MOT , but , unlike VOSA  , we all live in the real world and we know that if the car is failed on these things , one of a number of outcomes is likely : a) the plates get swapped for correct ones and then swapped back again after the test  , b)the customer gets narked and goes somewhere else for a test next time  , or c) the customer gets narked and punches tester on the nose , or d) any combination of the above .  Of course if the tester is caught passing a vehicle with these "defects" , ie in a spot check , he could get penalty points against his name and the MOT stations .  Mad world eh?

I think in the end most testers don't want the hassle they are going to get from customers if they fail plates on minor points. Mind you the police don't seem to do much about wrong spacing and fonts , and they've got the authority to enforce it , whereas MOT stations haven't ,so it can seem a bit pointless failing  on these things as well.  (sorry to confuse anyone but all these things like postcodes , logos , backgrounds etc. only apply after 2001 , before that it was mainly fonts and spacing they were bothered about )

It is my belief that the new regulations were withdrawn by a DVLA Notice sometime in Nov 2007 ... as there were contradictions in 2 pieces of law.

I used to have a copy of the notice on this system but seem to have lost it ..

Yeah , forgot about the withdrawal notice , we never used to fail cars anyway so it didn't make any difference to us when they withdrew it !   ( Wonder how many VOSA employees are members of the Omega forum !! )
