Very much true.

Footage from China, so battery stability probably not great, but yup, that's pretty much how that goes. At least no-one else was in the lift with him.

Moral of the story is don't buy cheap electricals off Temu/Amazon.

Thermal runaway normal gives a bit more warning, but left to it's own devices that's what happens. EV batteries tend not to get quite that bad until you've had some obvious indication that it's about to happen because they're cooled and encapsulated for crash protection purposes.

E Scooter batteries have much less physical protection around them and can/will let go with very little notice beyond sudden heat and maybe a fizzing sound. Plenty of press about various things causing house fires etc with little warning.

And why such fires are so dangerous, as if getting barbequed in a lift wasn't enough...

I had no idea this technology was so unpredictable.

I seem to recall an electric car bursting into flames in a  car park quite recently.

Not good  :(, as already said, I wouldn't buy no-brand products containing lithium batteries - its just asking for trouble.

Interestingly, I saw this article pop up over the weekend. If it can be made commercially viable, these lithium fires may "soon" be a thing of the past...

Not really.  The number of unexpected "thermal events" on EVs is surprisingly high.  Obviously even higher if the EV has sustained a minor jousting mark, which is why most insurance garages refuse to go near them, and breakdown companies won't put them in compounds....

But, yes, cheap chinky shite with more charging circuits - like most cheap e-scooters - are pretty much destined for a quick destruction.

Vid on face box of someone working on a battery pack when it sparks and ignites, he steps away and pulls a lever that drops it into a tank of water that its sat on. If this is a proper assembly plant and they build them over safety tanks that tells you something.

This battery recycling plant near me certainly turned the business park into an impressive crater. They didn't handle Li-Po batteries either.

I managed to overheat a standard alkaline AA about 3hrs ago.  Threw it in the garden when it suddenly vented violently.

S'pose I should go and retrieve it before it gets mowed....
