Another NCDC topic.
« on: 01 September 2024, 19:44:01 »

My car was originally fitted with a ncdc 2013 / GID.
I replaced it with an NCDC2015 (without telematics) and CID screen.
Its getting a bit tired now and recently wasnt doing much of what it should do.
I pulled it out of the car yesterday, sprayed some contact cleaner  in and around it and blew an airduster around everything.
It surprisingly seems to have improved matters quite a bit but still have some issues.

1. Front panel securing lugs are broken off. Can I just swap the 2015 / 2013 panels over ?
2. Nav / top CD doesnt want to do anything at all. Presumably laser needs replacing. May well swap the one from the 2013.
Is it particularly fiddly / difficult to do ?
3. Four disc changer wasnt ejecting, but since squirting contact cleaner and air round it, it now ejects, but doesnt play CD,s.
Swap the laser from that too ? or swap the whole bottom half of the unit onto the 2015 ?

There may be more questions to come after dismantling.  :D

Alternatively, if my memory serves,  there is a small upright pcb which is the part that retains the pairing of the NCDC unit to the screen ?
If so, would it be easier / more sensible to swap these between the 2015 / 2013, and then put the original 2013 back into the car and all should be well ?

Having just studied the guide for laser replacement Im a bit nervous about tackling the job.
If need be I will just leave the NAV inoperable, if I can get everything else working.
On the one hand, the NAV is so far out of date its pretty useless. Waze on my phone is much better.
On the other hand, I dont like having things not working.

So if swapping the PCB board over isnt feasible, maybe swap the CD changers and front panels over ?

Just be thankful the engine and gearbox work, Albs. It's going to get much more difficult to keep all the stuff in these old buses working as they should.

Thats the sensible logical approach.
I however get annoyed when things dont work. It takes away from my pleasure of driving the car.
I plan on keep this car until I cant drive anymore, and want to keep it as good and original as I possibly can.
I know theres little sense in it, but I suppose its my hobby.
Cant run (can hardly fickin walk  ;D ) even if I was fit, I would rather chop my own legs off than take up golf.  :D
The Boxster will be going soon, the C1 is just a little heap of shite for commuting. The Omega is to keep me interested and out of mischief.   :)
And if I have plenty of spare time, swmbo will want me to help her in the garden and do lots of DIY in the house.  :o

Anyway...........I have just swapped the CD changer over from the old 2013 to the 2015.
Plugged in back into the car and got a CD safe message on the screen.
I didnt think these were paired to the top part of the unit, or needed a code ?

Have fitted the front panel from the original 2013 onto the 2015 unit this morning and it all works fine.  :)
Just need to solve the CD SAFE message (if possible) that came up when swapping 2013 CDC onto the 2015.
If I can get over that issue, I have a good working unit again apart from the satnav laser being fubar, which I can live with.

A bit of OOF searching has provided the answer. Need to swap over the vertical PCB from the 2015 unit .
Will have a look and see how doable I think it is.
Could be a couple of NCDC units for spares or repairs available soon.  ;D

To answer Q's from first post....

1. Front panel securing lugs are broken off. Can I just swap the 2015 / 2013 panels over ?
Yes (and teh button legends will better match it's purpose.

2. Nav / top CD doesnt want to do anything at all. Presumably laser needs replacing. May well swap the one from the 2013.
Is it particularly fiddly / difficult to do ?
Yes, and not too bad - the 2 ribbons are fiddly, and understand how the connector works rather than just ripping the ribbon out (that will end in tears)

3. Four disc changer wasnt ejecting, but since squirting contact cleaner and air round it, it now ejects, but doesnt play CD,s.
Swap the laser from that too ? or swap the whole bottom half of the unit onto the 2015 ?
Swap whole unit, but retain the vertical board from the NCDC

Top part of NCDC, the vertical board from the CDC3 and the display need to stay together, else you'll get various security errors.

Now reassembled with the best parts of the two units. Everything seems to be working ok apart from Satnav.
Havent fitted it back into the car yet as I havent finally decided on whether or not to swap lasers.
Ive just took the laser out of the old 2013 unit, Following TB,s guide,  but not all that confident about doing the same and then refitting everything on the one Im putting back into the car.
Its a job thats fiddly as f***.
Quit while Im ahead or dive in and hope I get it right, so everything is original and working ?
Decisions, decisions.  ::)

Does it require the GPS antenna to be connected and powered :-\

I would imagine so yes. The antenna has been connected and everything worked fine until the screen messages about no disc etc. appeared.

So it's just not reading the disk?  Often it will eject the CD at that point as well.

That usually is the laser. Laser replacement is in the category of "fiddly", bordering on "challenging"

Yep, doesnt read the disc, so almost certainly the laser. Having just removed the laser from the spare 2013 unit, I dont think Im going to risk dismantling the good unit to that extent, just to repair a hopelessly out of date Satnav.
I do like to have everything working, but thats probably going a step too far.
It will always annoy me a little bit though.  ;D

Back in the car now and working perfectly - apart from the mildly annoying lack of satnav, but I will live with that. At least for the moment.
Thanks for the help TB.  :y
