Back in the car now and working perfectly - apart from the mildly annoying lack of satnav, but I will live with that. At least for the moment.

Got one. 
Also got Waze free stanav on my phone, but will always be irritated by not being able to have colour maps on the screen of my old Omega.
Whether or not I get irritated to the point I pull the unit back out of the car and have a go at replacing the laser, only time will tell.

So it's just not reading the disk?  Often it will eject the CD at that point as well.

That usually is the laser. Laser replacement is in the category of "fiddly", bordering on "challenging"

I'll try most things and they either go well or I end up in casualty. Again.

I came to the same conclusion...............at least for the moment.

I would imagine so yes. The antenna has been connected and everything worked fine until the screen messages about no disc etc. appeared.

Is the SatNav Disk a known good one ie, genuine?, if you put a good original Audio CD in the SatNav Disk does it play / work? (From memory you need to select the Single / Multi button for above as well).

Have you tried cleaning the laser lens? Back in the past I had success resurrecting a few units by cleaning the lense with a cotton bud and some de-ionised water (this means taking the lid off the unit and getting stuck in!), it's quite surprising the film of dirt can accumulate.
