How to replace a dash display bulb
« on: 08 February 2025, 12:44:18 »

For the first time with an Omega, I need to get behind the dash to replace a light bulb.

On the way to the latest MOT, I noticed one side of the speedo display was not lite up, but a quick tap on the glass put the light back on. Thank goodness this wasn't spotted during the MOT, although when I turned on the lights to travel home, the light did not come on, until a tap again!

So, how do you get behind the dash please? ??? ???

Cannot find any OOF guide for it. ;)

mot wouldnt flag it up but to get to the bulbs you need to remove the instrument assembly. first  remove the cowling above the column and then you can reach the securing screw . instruments can be removed and bulbs replaced as required . im sure there will be a guide if req.

Centre air vent needs to come out too but it's a ten minute job start to finish.

Thanks all! :-* :y

That video Andy completed the picture for me, so thanks. :y

As stated, I have never had to get behind the dash on any of my Omega's.  Escorts, Cortina's, Wolsley Hornet, Caverliars, Carltons, a Senator, yes, when I couldn't be bothered to waste time using a garage.  But never an Omega, until now! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;)

if you do it with the column cowl still in place .yes you can reach the screw but be carefull not to scratch the top of the cowling when you pull the instruments out  !

You have to drop the wheel to its lowest position anyway. Removing the cowl is an extra 5 screws but does afford you access to place a cloth over the pivot on the column to prevent the lower screw on the cluster from dropping into it.

Also, whilst many of us wouldn't give the fiddle getting that bridging trim back in position around the upper cowl, it's really not a short cut when the aforementioned screw drops into the cowl.

Also if you have a decent reach then it might be easier to do most of the job from the passenger side.

You may find its worth replacing all of them (3 from memory), as all the disturbance often causes old ones to fail as well.

Yep.  I am going to do that TB as experience has taught me that if one goes, the others will follow.  Didn't know there were 3 though, so thanks for that.  I will buy some spares as well as I normally do. :D :y :y

...and make sure you get the right wattage bulbs as it's all too easy to buy the wrong ones. Correct wattage is 3W I think. Anything brighter and the brightness is totally different to the rest of the dash illumination including the CID.

Actually, that's another two/four bulbs worth changing whilst you're in there ;)

Also, you'll need to unplug the MiD/CID as you remove the cluster. Pull the cluster straight out, then roll the top towards you and you should be able to release the plug.

Many thanks to both of you.  Hopefully I am going to buy the bulbs, and fit this week :y :y
