Had four new tyres fitted to the Omega yesterday. I always Tyre Shopper for my tyres, and the nearest fitting place is Northampton. However, at no extra cost, I choose to have them fitted at home. What is even better, for the last three times, they have contacted me, apologising that they cannot provide the selected tyres on my fitting date , due to various reasons, and have upgraded me from budget to medium tyres, also at no extra cost.
Can't see the point of going to Northampton, when they will come to me for nothing.
I also noted that they are part of Halfords now.
Before I get slated for going for budget tyres...I can't see the point of paying big money for tyres to sit on the drive and perish.

It’s handy that they fitted them at home at no extra cost. 
Halfords acquired Axle Group Holdings Ltd, which owns the brands National Tyres and Autocare, Viking Wholesale Tyres, and Tyre Shopper to expand their service capabilities.
It’s your choice which tyres you have fitted, especially if you don’t drive far or fast. It's just a case of being legal.

May I interest you in some half worn Autogrips?  I guarantee you you can't exceed walking pace around roundabouts in the rain .  Terry the chip man put a new set on his A4 a few years back against my advice, and said they were fine....    ...until they were part worn and it rained, when he parked it in a hedge backwards, fortunately a lowish speed, as he had his boy in the car with him.  Laughed? I needed to dry my pants when he called me

Never skimp on tyres , bought budget once many years ago they only lasted around 7,000 miles so in my eyes they were useless, just had four Pirelli on the Range Rover highly recommended on the RR forum cost £935 so we shall see, the previous Hankooks managed 24,000 miles.

I can only dream of half or 24k from £600 worth of rears on mine.  Perhaps that explains why I absolutely should be spending good money on tyres

Back in the day...mid 60's, I put a set of Goodyear Remoulds on my A30, which did 30,000 miles with me and were still going strong when I sold the car.

We don't see remoulds these days. Are they still legal?

My Dad always had remoulds on his cars, but he never really went very far and he rarely went over 40mph, so they were fine for him. 

They probably weren't great for the teenage hooligan that borrowed his cars in later years though, but they always kept the car on the road.

I put four tyres on my ML on Wednesday £££££££££s .... today I'd to top up the pressure on one of them - it had 10psi in it. Unfortunately the tyre place was shut today!

My Dad was far too trusting with me and his brand new cars. I repaid his trust by driving every single one of them flat out on a regular basis. I am genuinely ashamed that I did that. 
He had a Vectra GSi hatch and one day he said he thought it had a slight misfire, so I road tested it flat out with him in it. When we returned back home he said to my Mum ‘Jeez, I didn’t even know it went that fast, and I can’t say that I enjoyed it’.

That was my first accident, and was followed up by every other Escort and Focus I've driven since**.



*That might be a lie, as it was an estate, he might have let me use it when I bought my first house to move some stuff.

That takes me back!  Yes, I paid £10 for each remould in 1971 from a tyre outfit in South London.  Unless I had the wind against me I could reach a heady speed of 50 mph, 40 mph if it was!  So my remoulds were never an issue, and went with the car to the scrap yard when I got my first company car.  Never paid again for tyres until 30 years later!

Can’t imagine those tyres would ever meet modern regulations, but they were great for us youngsters at the time.  Did see examples though of remoulds having lost their outer tread in one piece!
