heated seat elements.
« on: 04 April 2025, 20:07:53 »

I have just bought a pair of new, old stock genuine GM heated seat elements for nest to nothing from ebay.
Not sure if they are for prefacelift or facelift seats, or even if there is a difference.
Part number is 90458941, if anyone has access to info on that kind of thing ?
If they are suitable for a facelift, I suppose the next question will be - is it practical to dismantle my drivers seat to replace the heating element ?

As I always tell our passengers when they ask if it's possible...

Anything is possible,. whether it is reasonable is a different matter altogether. >:D

Joking aside, the seats are pretty easy to strip down. But best donw on a bench. And as I am sure you already know, those front seats are bastids heavy, so you might consider not wanting to blow up your head again quite yet ;)

Several years ago I was walking backwards with one and fell over. It landed on my chest and cracked a rib.
Lesson learnt.  ;D

That part no. is for the front adjustable seat back (not the base  / cushion) used with leather electric seats with memory. Appears to be for early models - chassis no. R1000001 to T1074908, not later models.

I've also a vague recollection that many years ago, I asked about the parts to replace a front seat heater mat in my 3.2 Elite that wasn't working. I was told that on later models the heating element was part of the cover and wasn't replaceable on its own, whereas on early models, the element was a replaceable separate part.

Just because it wasn't sold as an individual piece, it doesn't mean that it cannot be replaced, it simply means that changing it may be more involved ;)

There will be differences though because facelift seats had 5 settings whereas the earlier seats only had one. Presumably there's a component that might require swapping from one to tother to maintain functionality...

Going from memory - never to be trusted - leather seats have the elements stitched into the back of the leather. Cloth seats have replaceable pads.

Whether the pads are the same between eras, who knows, but FL front seats have a heating controller in the seat base itself, rather than a simple power feed from earlier ones, so unlikely they are easily interchangeable between FL and earlier.

Gixer and I stripped down a couple of his leather seats, and repaired the element, which was the easiest option.  I get a feeling he might have posted up some pics at the time?

Apparantly it is a 'mare' of a job to fit early pads to a later car. A friend of mine had a a fl 2.5 CDX estate with cloth seats and he tried to fit heated seat pads to the rear seat base. The electrics were the easy part - it was the heating elements were the problem, and dispite stripping the seat base down, he struggled (can't now remember why), but fortunately he later found the rear seats from a scrap Elite with cloth (a bit of a rarity) with them built in.
