New fuel and air filters should improve matters.

If it's been badly tuned, then the excess fuel comes out as coal.

Yes, although it has had regular oil changes the air filter was last changed at about 53,000 miles and the fuel filter last changed at about 42,000 miles! It was on about 93,500 when I bought last month. ::)  Didn't spot that until after I bought it tho, just noted the regular oil changes. Doh!  ::)

Both replaced now, although I pulled out the air filter at my mates in Scotland and blew it out with his compressor and it was minging!  ::)

Should have bought a nice, uncomplicated Vauxhall  :)

But, since you didn't, what more can you do other than to hope it passes its MOT. When is it due?

Like a Vauxhall Omega?  ;D

As the Americans say....."Life turns on a dime" :y

By March you may have won the Euro lottery and have big-titted wenches throwing themselves at you for a chance to sit in the passenger seat of your latest £2M Ferrari or Lambo.

But if this doesn't come to pass I hope  the mighty derv can be sorted relatively inexpensively. :y

............
Today I took it to the local BMW specialists for them to check it out and they think that as well as the EGR delete, the DPF has been tampered with/gutted/or partially gutted ...........
They said that its best to live with it as it is, but it may or may not pass an MOT and if it fails, it will mean a new DPF, possibly a new EGR and coded back to stock. Ouch!  ::)

Thoughts please?  :)

My son's pick up truck was remapped, had a gutted dpf and egr delete and it went through MOTs fine after it was done.  I know what was done to it because we did it. Things may have changed since then as it was smoke test back then but he had no issues.

Although I never did it to the 335d, I was part of a very good forum (babybmw) back then and I knew several users who had done what you describe and had had no issues getting an MOT (same engine as yours, just in the 3 series platform).

The only place you may fall foul is if the MOT man can see the dpf has been tampered with from a visual inspection. I can't decide from you previous post if the specialist could actually see the dpf had been messed with, or if he deduced it from the readings. If it's visually noticable, one of those aftermarket theft guards might be your cheapest solution to hiding that fact.

If it does fail on emissions/smoke a good remap would sort that out, but honestly I wouldn't sweat the mot just because it's had dpf/egr delete and a remap.  :y

They didn't say anything about visual evidence that the DPF has been tampered with and think it was from the exhaust back pressure readings.

I think yesterday I was panicking at the prospect of having to spend lots of cash!  :D  So hopefully it will be OK.  :)

It looks like the MOT will be changing to do a particulate measurement to catch cars with gutted DPFs (I suspect 2026 so you have some time)

Well that's going to disappoint a good number of people. Still, noting like a bit of economic stimulus from all those new DPFs  ::)

Most of the cars who've had the DPF removed will be cracking on in age, I think a lot of them will be scrapped. Which is probably a big part of the plan.

Not sure how that will work...

Surely a well maintained non DPF car won't produce any more soot that a dpf equipped one. :-\
