If you watch a YouTube video by car dealer Barry Crampton, he shows you how many EV’s are registered but not sold. The car manufacturers are penalised for not hitting the EV sales target, the penalty being around £15K per vehicle under target. He shows that by narrowing down your Autotrader search to new EV’s, an awful lot of vehicles are registered at stupid months of the year. Why would people buy a brand new car in February or August with no reduction, when the new reg comes out the following month.   ::)  I did a quick search myself and he’s right, random batches of EV’s are registered on the same dates. It looks like car manufacturers/car dealers are registering EV’s to avoid the penalties but they’re not actually sold vehicles, so they are taking the hit by selling EV’s with ten miles on as second hand. They can’t possibly survive for long by doing this and it’s killing the car industry.  >:(

Just watched the whole video and he’s right, what they are doing is unsustainable. Car manufacturers are switching tact, not by choice but through necessity.
If they manufacture cheaper, smaller cars, a £15K penalty for underselling EV’s is a big chunk of the profit gone, whereas a £15K penalty on a £110K car is less of a hit. So, they are slowing down production lines of cheaper, smaller petrol/diesel cars so that the imbalance of EV sales is less. They can’t continue like this for long and it’s all going to go pear shaped.

I agree with one of the comments, we have recently looked at several dealerships with the intention of buying a one year old, possibly two year old petrol/diesel car. There was nothing that took our fancy regardless of price. They’ve all gone to shit with stupid shapes, stupid dashboards, stupid grills etc. so we’re sticking with what we’ve already got.

I do like Harry's Garage, watched most of his stuff.

Oh for his lifestyle..... I'll just pop down to my Yacht in the South of France, taking the long way, in the McLaren, or maybe I should take the classic 1980's Lambo. Actually, no I'll take the Ferrari.

My favourite is the XJ12 Coupe .....

he bought it for next to nothing £5k/£6k IIRC but then spent a shed load on body & engine work and then another few grand on upgrading the fuel injection.

Elegant mid seventies shape and design. A very handsome motor car. :y

My advice when purchasing a milk float is not to spend anything remotely close to list price.....be it PCP or cash.

Around 40% of list price sounds about right for the latest registration and a handful of 'delivery miles'

This way you negate the horrendous depreciation. :y

Watched a lot of his stuff, learnt a lot from his evaluation of the TDV8 Range Rover which he & Jeremy Clarkson both own, glad I bought mine and not the V6 garbage.

Simple solution, If they cant hit target reduce the price by £7500 to customer and save them selves £7500 in the process or is that too simple because dealers are just greedy.  ::)

And this is the problem, nobody is buying milk floats. As he said, people have made up their minds that they genuinely don't want one and it's killing the motor industry.  :y

At the moment, car manufacturers have to make sure that 22% of their car sales are EV's, rising to 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2035. I can tell you now that target will never happen. People are stubborn, and many have made up their minds that they'll never own an EV.
Car production is dictated by demand, and there is very little demand for EV's, so all car manufacturers are screwed by something beyond their control. This is a really serious issue for them.

To put a finer point on it, if you run a shop and something doesn't sell well, you would no longer stock it. Unfortunately for car manufacturers, the EV is the only thing they can stock and it isn't selling, so what are they supposed to do.

Tis true.......because they are too expensive.

Knock 60% of list price and you'll shift a few. :y

Hmm, Net zero requirements for the car user, extra Gatwick runway for the plane users. Me thinks they’re not taking these targets seriously, as it would appear to be counteractive.  ::)

Absolutely. That car sounds utterly gorgeous too. The perfect antidote to milk floats... >:D
