I don't find the card per-se to be the issue - as others have said we have driving licenses, passports, NI numbers etc. For me the issues are...

1) Are we required to carry it at all times? Or is it like a driving license - you've got 3 days to get down the cop-shop with it?
2) Who can 'demand' to see it?
3) If I get attacked by a great white lesser spotted Somerset squirrel and am bleeding to death, are they going to demand to see the card before treating me?

Anyone who thinks this is going to stop illegal immigrants getting jobs or claiming benefits is an idiot, who will probably be voting Reform at the next election anyway so there is zero political capital for Labour in introducing it. Barking, the lot of them.

The only people who might possibly believe this will stop illegal immigration etc. etc. will be the hard of thinking who vote Labour.
No one who votes Reform will be taken in by this nonsense. Or indeed the nonsense the Tories spouted for fourteen years.
Thats why they vote Reform instead of the two parties who have run the country into the ground.

Of course they could turn out worse, (although it would be hard to be worse than this lot) but we know for a fact that the others are utter shite, and have been for over thirty years,  so bearing in mind their general direction of travel is the right one, its worth giving them a chance in my opinion.

Apparently the American tech company Palantir who are heavily involved in digital ID card systems worldwide, including the UK's proposed scheme, sponsored the Yes campaign. 

I vaguely recall they leaved a load of data to crooks a few years back....

I’m guessing that anyone that signed the petition would have received their reply by now. 

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Do not introduce Digital ID cards”.

Government responded:

We will introduce a digital ID within this Parliament to help tackle illegal migration, make accessing government services easier, and enable wider efficiencies. We will consult on details soon.

And then Blah, blah, blah and a lot of waffle and then this bit :

For clarity, it will not be a criminal offence to not hold a digital ID and police will not be able to demand to see a digital ID as part of a “stop and search.”

So, if hardly anyone downloads the government app, the system will surely fail before it’s even started.    On the website it goes on to say that anyone that doesn’t want a digital ID can have a physical card or, if they don’t want a physical card they’ll have to use their NI Number and photo ID, such as a passport or photo driving licence. It will still be acceptable for employers to check as usual. Now there’s a novel idea. 
You couldn’t make this shit up could you.

An employer who has previously flouted the ‘No NI Number or proof of right to work’ will still flout the digital ID rule, so it will make no difference.

You either have a well executed scheme that is mandatory OR use the money saved on the authorities doing their job and swooping on businesses and dealing with the illegals and employer. OOF could supply the target business addresses. Or set up a snitch line.

So it's not just about clamping down on the black economy and illegals working, they will roll it out to other things to the point that it will become impossible to live without your digital StarmerCard.
