Y26SE Oil Leak around Oil Filter
« on: 01 December 2025, 18:18:11 »

Hello again
So V6 with canister type filter. The canister is dripping oil slightly. There is allways a drop when I take a look. Terrible place to study in floor but I took the whole canister off and found that the O-ring there against engile block was hard and brittle and tired. That is one possibility. I alredy have original spare for it. Cam covers are dry, checked with mirror. In canister area there are cooler pipes which may leak and also the area around crank sensor is wet. Any ideas how to proceed? Is crank sensor O-ring typically leaking in these enines and available separately? Does anyone know the size. I changed it perhaps 15 years ago. All ideas welcome.

You've answered your own question.

If it's leaking from the seal between the block and filter case, you have two options:

1. Replace the seal and ensure that the retaining bolt is correctly torqued with thread lock.
2. Convert it to a spin on filter.

Not sure why you would need to disturb the oil cooler plumbing to do either... :-\

Thanks DG, yes canister case is clear. I was just thinking "while I am there" whether I should check something else, too, as it is difficult to see where the oil is really coming from.
1. Is crank sensor going to oil area or is it in a dry place.
2. Tightening the oil tube fittings agains block was in my mind, perhaps I just damage them if I touch...

In this case, I'm of the opinion that you have most likely found the cause, and I'd just sort that.  Mainly because I have some bad memories of oil cooler pipes, lol

Thanks TB, better then not to touch them. Found spare number for the crank O-ring, does anyone know dimensions of that? 90307502

The leakage have bee somewhere for a while. Found also O-ring for crank sensor. When I put the canister back to block what is the tightenin toque of the central bolt?

bit late now but i was going to suggest not disturbing the crank sensor unless absolutely necessary !
i beleive it's the cable that gets brittle and fails on them

Additionally, I think oil leaks in that area speed up the cable's demise, base on my own personal experiences.

I would urge the OP to carry a spare sensor in the boot, along with the torx socket (E8?)!

Ahhh, that sweet sound of XP booting up with an old mechanical disk drive ;D

It says:
Attach oil filter housing with a new seal (the large o-ring between housing and block) and tighten to 45Nm / 33lbft

I used to do that & when the CSS failed on my Omega I presented the recovery driver (there was snow on the ground & I had a caravan attached to the back of the car) with a the boxed sensor & told him the fault! His reply was ... 'no one has ever done that before!'  ;D ;D ;D
