Midland Express Way (M6 Toll)
« on: 20 September 2008, 19:13:34 »

I never usually agree with paying tolls in addition to my road tax if I do not need to do so.  However, for the first time I used the Midland Express Way, M6 Toll, whilst travelling North and then back down South and must admit I thought it fantastic! :y :y :y

Even though I paid £4-50 each way, it was so good avoiding that blessed junction at Birmingham with the M5 and M6, instead zooming along a basically clear motorway as oppossed to the queues on the old M6 where I have wasted weeks worth of time during my years of business mileage between Bristol and the North! :( :(

A great improvement 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

The question must be though why do we have to pay these tolls (and for the Dartford Crossing on my journey) when we pay road tax, VAT on fuel along with high taxes on the juice?! :'( :'( >:( >:(

the motor vehicle became a method of lining MPs pockets paying for everything else including the spongers and all the failed projects which should never had gotten off the ground....

hence why VED and the income from fuel tax go intot he main pot and only about 10-20% gets put back into the roads  >:(

I think that the government wants it both ways.
Toll charges and no road tax maybe considersed to be O.K.
Road tax and no charges may be acceptable.
Road tax and toll charges..........................no way!!!!!!! :-* :-* :-*

and how much does it have to go to before it's 'too expensive' & you'd queue up with the rest of us on the M6? If it's £4-50, has it aready gone up since it was opened? :-/

In this instance this was very true TB as I averaged an mpg of about 31 through this M6 Toll section covered in rapid time, whereas going on the old route I would have stopped and started many times, averaging just 17 mpg if lucky at £1.13 a litre! ::) ::) ::) ::)

As said, I didn't want to get into a debate about rights and wrongs - the milk of human kindness is not flowing too well today, and I'd probably get in another argument ::)

I think its worth the £4.50 (was £3 when opened, but only for first 2m cars or something like that).  Whether or not we should have to pay is a debate I'll join another day...

i found its a very fast piece of road too, as long as they stay smart and keep the camera cash machines away people will always use it.

Its great bit of road to get your foot down.  8-)

Be aware, its still classed as public road, with a legally enforcable 70mph speed limit, and its not unusual for a camera van to be parked up, esp on that section where an A road runs parallel...

Should be speed limit free like the motorways before 1965 (I think).then it would be great fun.
many motoring magazines used to speed test their cars on the M1 in the early sixties....legally. :y :y
