Just dropped from 10 meg to 2 on Virgin cable. 750mb gets me capped now, piece of cake if I'm mucking about with the website or doing a new install.

Having used both, I would definately go for cable over ADSL if it is an option. Very stable and the contention ratio is only 20:1 instead of 50:1

The price to pay is Virgin's customer service.  >:(

Still, at least the poxy proxies have gone  :y
ADSL contention ratios are no longer specified at IP STream level.

In my experience, cable is rubbish, partly due to the constant broadcasts, mostly due to the ISPs.

I'm not the only one, the only reason it isn't banned is due to the government wanting a back door into everyones browsing history.

Where shared logins are used if someone say surfed porn, even if they cleaned up afterwards with internet history and cookies ect the ad server could decide the child using it next wants to buy porn.

(used porn as an extreme example)

It is just I think people should be private as they like, I don't want my DNA on a database, I don't want an ID card, I don't want my post sorted through, I don't want my internet use sorted through and I don't want adverts for watches thrown my way based on keywords from my browsing.

But then I do use real name for some forums, just have, saves trying to think of an alias, but it is with my terms.

I wouldn't - I expect they know every site I have visited, and I know that the info can be used by law enforment agencies.

I also know there are ways around this, but I would only use them for something embarrasing

Nothing would surprise me, I have often spoke on the phone to the support and they have said something, then when questioned they soon backtrack.

Your ISP already collects a whole heap of info, as they are required to do so by law.

It still beats the cr*p out of Wanadoo and Tiscali.

Who is good then TB - on prices that us mortals can cope with?

Depends exactly which bits you are talking about.  Some cannot be bypassed...

Additionally, think of what websites collect about you. We (OOF) don't actively collect info, but I can tell you a fair amount about your system, such as OS, browser, service packs (indirectly, likely vulnerabilities).  With a small number of mods, we could collect more in depth info about your system, including username.  Seeing as many XP users don't use a password, and make themselves Admins, we have the info to get into your system to play silly buggers.

Be more worried about where you visit, rather than what your ISP collects (unless its illegal, as ISPs are more tied to authorities).

Wanadoo are now Orange - you're goign back a bit if you were with Wanadoo.  Tiscali normally ain't that bad at a technical level, just the CS is poor.

You need to chose an ISP that suits your best, different ISPs suit different users better.  For example, Zen Internet matches my needs, and runs OOF pretty well - how many other fairly busy forums can claim to run off a ADSL line?

If you want to hammer the torrent sites non stop, no consumer level broadband is going to be ideal - get a decent leased line in for that (and pay the costs!).  Most ISPs will shape p2p traffic or limit you, seeing as a maxed out 24/7 MaxDSL line will cost the ISP around £2.2 - £3k per month for that one user in Central and transit costs. Hardly a sensible business plan to sell for £20 per month ;)
