Colin chapman of lotus was probably the man who really brought the importance of lighter is better to engineers and enthusiasts everywhere.
from his earliest designs he always tried to save weight in any way he could. He disliked over engineering in any form and once said that the perfect race car would win the race and then fall apart just after it crossed the line.once it got any further than that it proved that it had been over engineered for its intended purpose.

His earlier road cars certainly werent over engineered  :y ;D

Most Elans,Europas,Elites,Esprits,Eclats from the seventies  did exactly that...fall apart. Great drivers cars though.

Most Elans,Europas,Elites,Esprits,Eclats from the seventies  did exactly that...fall apart. Great drivers cars though.

So did Vauxhall Viva's, Datsun Cherry's, Rover 2000 / 3.5's and probably many others that I cannot remember now! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
