Have you ever paid to put air in your tyres?
« on: 23 September 2008, 15:49:16 »

I haven't and hopefully never will. I see it as a function of a garage to provide air and water for free even though there is a cost to them to provide and maintain the facility. Haven't seen a single pay machine here in Spain.

I must get it from my mother who is a regular driver (most days) and has never put petrol in any car in 60 years of motoring. She only uses attended service garages!.

For a while the only garages in my town all charged £0.20 minimum for air so had little choice. We now have a BP and Sainsbury's which are both free.

Just a couple of times, when I was pushed. Most recently I wanted to 'up' the tyre preasures for towing the caravan back home & my compressor failed part way through .... I'd only had it about 20 years  ::)  ;D  :y  :y
It does go against the grain though.

Can't see that it costs much to provide an airline and an outside tap. It's the least they can do if they expect me to buy their fuel. >:(

Of course, one of these machines that automatically adjusts the pressure and rings a little bell when it's done is another matter, and total overkill.

Worse is when they try to charge for water. I stopped once in Harlow to put a bit the washer bottle of a transit and they wanted a quid for 'screen wash'!

Yes but grudgingly, not for some time now. Got a portable pack in the workshop & a good old fashioned footpump in the boot. Forecourts do struggle nowadays so have to rake in what they can.
Hands up who remember the old rotary display pumps that used to whir, click & ding, & forecourt attendants filling the car for you?
Not forgetting 5 star fuel & £1 worth of 2 star, a suirt of 25/1 in the fizzy & give the tank a shake before you spluttered off in a cloud of 2 stroke blue haze! 8-)

I dont begrudge them 20p but they dont even give you enough time to check the 4 tyes and your spare.

50p is taking the wee wee unless it does them for you and gives you a coffe while you wait.

The Vans rear tyre was realy low yesterday (don't use it very often) anyway went to local garage and they have put a new machine in. Was free before now its 50p for 3 minutes... and guess what it was that slow that i did not get the trye up to pressure in that 3 mins and had to put another 50p in. Robbing B****DS. They have made £1 out of me but they have lost a cust that buys about £150 of fuel each week there. so thats about £7,500 a year they will not get from me.. so i hope they get an extra 15,000 cars to blow their tyres up to make up for it..

I have a little air compressor which runs of the cig. lighter.
called in to a garage to put air in the front tyre on my bike last week,as it was a bit soft.when I saw that it costs 50p these days I  couldnt believe my eyes. got on the bike and went straight home.
As tyre pressures are a critical safety issue,I think it would be a good idea to legislate that any fuel retailer must provide means of tyre inflation for free. :-/

I have a small compressor that works from the 12v socket, an RAC one. But it says it's only a temporary measure and is not accurate. My local ASDA has a free air hose, but I dont trust it, it's always got scabby bandages on it and air hisses all the time. My local Jet garage has a 50p digital compressor and I use that because I think it is probably more accurate.

If you're going to drive a big, juice guzzling omega with all the costs that come with it, 50p aint gonna kill you, tightwads. ;D
