kids and air bags, legalities
« on: 25 September 2008, 06:18:39 »

does anybody know know/undrstand the rules regarding putting children in the front passenger seat when the car is equipped with air bags. have a 3 yr old son and expecting a daughter any day now. the missus was saying it would be easier/ more conveniant if she could sit in the back with newborn baby with little lad sat up front with me. was just wondering what the rules are regarding this. any help/ advice greatly appreciated.

No idea of the rules and laws regarding this, but I know some cars have a switch to turn off the front passenger aitbag for this reason.  Not sure if the Omega has the same.

Someone will know as plenty of members have kids. :y

as i understand it and never been pulled by the plod

u can put a child in the front seat in a forward facing car seat only and at any age  a newborn has to be in the rear if the car seat he/she is in faces to the rear  cos the airbag if deployed will force the seat back and could hurt the child
so forward facing seats front rear facing seats in the rear
hope this helps

A rear facing child (baby) seat in a seat with an airbag is highly dangerous.

Forward facing, which your 3 year old will be in, are fine

However it is recommended to have the seat as far back as possible (far away as possible from the airbag)

According to my car's manual, VX made a child seat containing a transponder which automatically disabled the passenger airbag when installed.
