Had an entertaining 'discussion' this morning with TheBoy, about ways to get to France. I opted for the Ferry, firstly its going to break up the journey nicely. I have to drive through central London to get to Whitechaple to pick up a friend. So it will be a good 3/4 hours from my house to Dover with the stop off.

But the main difference for me was price, i have booked a ferry, return crossing, with the car & 3 people. Was £45 in total.

Tunnel is over double the price...




How on earth do you get tunnel trips for around £50 return?

b/c no trains running?  Last I heard the car trains were the ginger stepchild of the operation, and they really wanted you to go elsewhere so that they could concentrate on lorries and the Eurostar.

I can remember, was about 4 years ago tho.....turned up without a ticket and was asked for around £70 for a day trip.....promptly had an arguement with the ticket guy....It was advertised as £20 for a day trip then on the website (but i hadnt see the small print that the ticket must be purchased at least 24hrs in advance)

Long story short......Customer services sold me a ticket over the phone for £20 after a bit of threating to use the ferry lol!   Result  

So perhaps you still have to book at 24 hours in advance to get a cheaper deal?  :-/

just come back up whitechapel road and nip through the Blackwall tunnel. no need to go through the centre then.

There is the thought in my mind that i can always swim for it in the boat if the worst happens.

I also enjoy the fresh sea air, although personal reasons, i find its an all-round better experience. (even if it is slower)

just come back up whitechapel road and nip through the Blackwall tunnel. no need to go through the centre then.

Going down the M40/A40, down the Marlybone road, just get around the congestion charge zone.

I did think M25 way, but thats a long way around.

Going through at around 10:30 on Friday, should be ok.

Stop making excuses, and you know full well the train is (normally) similar price

I guess some people like the airport/flight on their holidays, whereas normal people are anxious to get the travelling over with
