Keep the 'do not drive' note.., that should be proof enough that he took the money and didn't fix it and left it in that state.  Court can just take a sample of his handwriting and see he wrote it.  If he appears at all of course.  together with the bill from the garage and the cam belt bill, that is proof enough that he didn't fix what he was supposed to.

Yes I agree with all previous comment; go to Trading Standards and take out a claim at the County Court which is very cheap to do.

I would also add, to make it really hot for this person, go to the Police and report the theft, which unless he was to return it it is, of the water pump!     This guy deserves more than just civil action against him; he deserves a criminal record, it he hasn't got one already!

This shister must not be allowed to get away with it!!
