How long till terminal failure... lol
« on: 03 October 2008, 00:36:12 »

Well its getting better and better...

Engine now has a habit of dropping revs enough to jolt the engine, then raise them to about 1k before steadying out.
Missfire has got alot worse, and the 'kick' at 4k where it recovers power is more prominent.
Starting it from cold/being stood is now taking about 12 to 15 cranks (2 turns of the key usually) and it then splutters into life before running ok.
Every so often (at idle) it feels like its running on only 5 cylinders (shaky car)
Cold starts == blue smoke during initial acceleration too

The autobox is also starting to act up some more...
Has a habit of going between 3rd and 4th on the motorway at a steady 70
Putting it into park 'knocks' or jolts at times
Still awefully slow in going into reverse from park/neutral...

Car has had:
camcover gaskets
new plugs
new leads
new coilpack
countless oil changes (oil turns thick black after around 2.5k miles) and breathers done at same time
2 recent ATF fluid changes

it uses about a litre of oil and coolant over a 2k mile period.  Leaking oil from between the block & head on passenger bank too...

180k miles tho!!  Yay!!

Can't afford to sort the engine & box yet (by sort I mean replace/upgrade) and can't really do without the car... So how long do you think its got till it goes bang  :D

None at all, just the usual ones from flashing them out.

I don't know about the other problems without looking at the car but that level of consumption is very excessive!

Head gasket failure could be just one answer I'm afaid and to reply to your question ;  it will not be long before it goes "bang" if you do not have the HG done, or cure the problem(s) that are causing your 'difficulties'!! :'( :'(

Aye, the HBV has been replaced too (forgot to mention) but tbh the engine has been goofing up for a good while now with no real fix from any amount of work...

Given the plan is to just fit a new engine and box to it (well, rebuilt before fitting) and just do away with the existing one, not really interested in fixing the current 2.5 lump

Plus, aslong as the engine holds out, will be easier and quicker to just replace both than fix the current problems in-situ

Big Paul 180K is fair mileage, you ain't done bad out of the motor.  Just keep driving it into the ground and then replace when you can :P
