Another trailer thread - but with a difference....
« on: 03 October 2008, 06:48:51 »

Quick question:

Is it legal to carry a small trailer on a roofrack, assuming it is within the weight limit and properly secured?

I have banded the question about my peers and a lot of sucking of teeth has been done....I cant see why not..... :-/

I dont see why not either, as long as properly secured.

As longas the above is satisfied, I can't see any reason why not either.

Its down to the security of the load and the max weight limit of the roof bars and vehicle mounts.

I once moved a single draw devan bed and matteress 50 miles......on a roof rack............on a 1.2 Nova!

As already stated I cannot see why you cannot Gaffers, as long as it is securely tied on to robust roof bars and it does not impinge your driving ability i.e. obscure any windows, or overhang the rear (or front!) of the vehicle without warning signs / flags attached to it.

Have only been stopped once whilst carrying huge loads on top of a Carina II Estate, and that was because a boyfriend (prat!!) at the time was holding a piece of plastic pipe against the side of the car!  I told him it was not legal, but he was a pursuavive bastard and convinced me to do it for a short distance ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Just don't pick up any oak sideboards - however solid the ebay trader tells u it is lol.

A trailer became a 'must have' for us after we bought a cheap sideboard - tied it securely to the roof rack and erm, it kind of came apart bit by bit on the journey back.  With two bits coming down the front windscreen while we were on the motorway lol.  Kindof a stressful experience Jue was driving while i had my ears peeled and eyes skyward wondering what was gonna fall on us next lol.

The seller did NOT get any feedback on ebay lol.

When I took my trip to Croydon to pick up the Late MV6. Myself and Fred117 loaded the towing dolly in the boot. Gas tank was in the way for the main drawbar so on with the roofbars and on it went. 70mph lots of wind noise but thats where is stayed.

the small trailer  on the roof still wont be as tall as most caravans  so your ok there and most roof limits are about 70kg on r=inc roof bars  so the weight might be an issue

I have thought of that and I will just take the wheels off....reduce a lot of weight.

On a side note I have been searching for a towbar for the new Jag:

-Jag in Hannover - 1080 euros fitted tax free
-A Newcastle based company - 217 sterling and fit yourself  (exact same part, from the same supplier)

100kg on the Mig i think  :y

the Highway Code states simply that "you must secure your load and it must not stick out dangerously"
