had one of these nuisance microsoft updates this morning so went with it, after turning back on, my piece of sh1te toshiba will not startup and goes into a repair process which fails. i then go into safe mode which fails, restore only gives one point -which fails and everything else fails- on one test critical error comes up with a code number.
and guess what- warranty run out 29th sept. contacted tosh and their repairs people said tough out of warranty !!!
so how do i get the sodding thing to work or will i lose hundreds of videos and pics and sue toshiba? its the second thing to go wrong with it within the year !!!

Firstly, you'll get sod all out of any PC manufacturer - it is YOUR responsibility to back up data.

Mnaufacturer should provide a mechanism to restore back to factory image - either a rebuild disk, or a process you have to do at first switch on. You will likely lose all data.

If the HDD hasn't failed, and PC shop can recover the files for a price.

i managed to back up a fair amount of pics etc but usually do this on dvds/cds over a period of time, this has failed a week b4 i was due to put some more down, thank the lord my holiday pics are still on my memory cads !!

What operating system?  Best to get a hold of the windows disk and do a repair.

i'd contact microsoft as there may be known problems with that update  :-?

bleeding vista !!!  i can use the sodding things but havnt got too much of a clue when they go wrong !

I'd get a hold of the vista disk and do a repair (not a re-install) and you'll probably be back in business.

Can he not download a Linux rescue image from the net to give him file access for backing up data? Worked a treat for me the other day when I needed to reset a lost XP Admin account password - but that's all that particular image did...

Plus - there is a way to recover a Windows XP system registry to the original 'as fresh install' condition. This solves  corrupt registry issue and allows boot up for file recovery. May still work for Vista.

They will give a V sign, as it is most likely a OEM copy, thus all support is down to manufacturer.

I would use Ghost Enterprise from a DOS boot disk/stick to get image, then Ghost Explorer to recover files from image. Then rebuild laptop.

But if not PC literate, local PC shop may be better.

before anything take the HDD out mount to another machine and back up the data..

Then you can use the restore CD for Toshiba..Father had a similiar problem..I restore with it..But you must have the restore CD
