I'am currently watching a documentary about Titanic and her sister ship which both met with the same watery end.
The 4th funnel on both these ships was a dummy put there for cometic reasons only apparently. :y :y

Yes indeed Optimist as prestige was everything in those "man rules the universe" Edwardian days and the more funnels a ship had the better it seemed in class, speed and the ultimate in technology; a real status symbol.............what is that about men and compensating for something.......... ::) ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;)

in case you missed my quiz last night - see if they mention the "Gigantic" - it was the 3rd sister ship - changed the name to "Britannic" after the "Titanic" went down   ::)

white star wanted to distance themselves from the whole big sounding names  :o

saw an old episode of QI last night - did you know that white star stopped paying wages to the crew from the moment the ship went down? how cheap is that? they figured you can't be working if theres no ship to work on!!  ;D

That was usual practice with all merchant crew, not just with White Star. ;)

Indeed it may be the same today, but I know for a fact that during WWII if a merchant seaman lost his ship from under him and survived he was only paid up to the moment the ship was afloat!!!! :'( :'( :o :o

So not only did a vast number of merchant seaman lose their lives / risked their lives during the WWII conveys, especially those to the Baltic, not receive the recognition they deserved in terms of medals, they also lost their pay if the ship was lost >:( >:( >:( >:(
