What to do with old Anti-freeze
« on: 08 October 2008, 19:22:37 »

What do we do with old Anti-freeze? Old oil goes to the local Refuse site for recycling. Any ideas?
Surely it can't go down the drain, can it!!!!!! :-/ :-/

Quote from the MSDS
Quote
Small amounts may be flushed down a sink if permitted by local rules; large amounts should be retained for later disposal as liquid waste.

Assuming it's already a 50% solution in water and you are only disposing of a few 10s of litres.... I, personally, would flush it down the loo (foul drain). But NOT a rain drain as this goes straight to rivers etc.

Mine ends up on the road, after running off the drive and over the pavement ...., usualy followed by copious amounts of water as the system flush continues ..... .. there's no way I'll collect coolant as it drains .. bad enough trying to collect oil without making a mess !!!

You can legally poor it into any inlet into a sewer (so flush it down the loo), however it cannot be poured into a storm drain, the reason is that sewerage goes to be processed and is tested to check it meets a certain standard before being reintroduced to the environment however water in a storm drain often passes directly into rivers and streams without purification.  :y
