Tom Tom is fairly safe option and there are loads of POI's (Ponts of Interests) you can download, plus other voices etc. I personaly use a no voice option but which does give camera warnings etc.
I cannot do it the old fashion way with paper maps as my arms are not long enough any more to read the maps!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

We use Tom Tom, helps us find LPG garages in a rush (one of the POI's u can upload).  Far far less arguements and a much easier ride.  Except when the thing sends us 100 miles in the opposite direction for some strange reason lol.

Only any good if the old bag in the passenger seat can use it ;D

The reason we got a TomTom on my PDA 5 years ago was to cut down on arguments in the car.

Of the handheld ones, TomTom is the market leader for a reason.  I use tomtom on my mobile.

However, no portable device works as well and accurately as built in systems.  And its less junk to cart around, and doesn't leave the telltale circles on windscreen so thieves know whats in glovebox.

Completely agree. I have the Omega CID for the Siemens NCDC 2013 and the latest NavTeq CD. (This now takes postcodes!).

Rubbish! A quick cursory glance through a road atlas before you set off to get a list of towns to head between and then referring to the big green road signs are perfect for the main part of most jouneys, but I find that the SatNav comes into its own on that last few miles once you're then in a town. You can't possible carry enough street atlas (what's the plural of atlas; atli ??) to cover all the towns in the UK.

The ONLY disadvantage of my internal built in NavTeq system is that when I get a bloody phone call during that last few miles it blanks out the screen with "External Audio Source" and usually just as I'm approaching a really complicated, and unfamiliar, junction >:(

Tom Tom is the best seller and easiest to get accessories for, they are falling over themselves to sell units. An XL widescreen unit with full UK and European maps is available at PC world for £109,  they are getting cheaper all the time.
I have a Navman S70 which has never put a foot wrong, all sat navs are as previously stated a driver aid, they are not to be obeyed without question, ie if it takes you towards a river you do not have to drive into it, common sense is also required. Mine got me out of a sticky mess in Paris earlier this year and I was glad I had it.

Agreed. When I 1st got the Omega it was also my 1st foray into the world of SatNav. Twice it caused me to pull away and drive through a red light becasue it said "turn right now". I know I'm an idiot :-/ .

Accept they are a driver aid, not mandatory instructions, and they work well ;)
Does it help if i say i despise them with the passion you despise caravans? Map, road nos. , streetnames, easy. I know i'm way outvoted on this one so won't push my luck, they do have thier uses.
I think what riles me is folk in a £200 car going to work or shopping with them lit up in the window, i've seen them locally, why? :-/

On a regular route like work or shopping you should know where the speed cameras are really but i'm gonna back down on this one (grudgingly) because,
A:- I have at times had satnavs (not mine) stuck to the window of both my migs. Given my proffesion i can go anywhere by memory but the last few roads are easier with satnav.
B:- The Ozzy Osbourne swearing download voice is hilarious as is the sexy girl who i deliberatly come off a motorway jtn & go straight back on just to listen to her saying i'm a naughty boy & how she's going to punish me. I won't say on here what she offers when you obey her instructions!!!!!.
    C:- Despite being a gobby tinker i know when i'm beat so Satnavs won't go into room 101!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::) :'( :D

am not particualry fond of those devices - like many others, yet they can be a valuable help (as long as you treat them as a help ONLY - but tht has already been said). used viamichelin in the past but had it replaced by medion gopal 4435 which came out only a month or two ago. excellent yet cheap - exactly as i like it
