car Auctions
« on: 15 October 2008, 11:25:00 »

Went to the local car auction yesterday for a nose around.
Some of the cars were being sold  with the words TOTAL LOSS on the windscreen.......can anybody tell me what this means and are these cars safe to buy ..or sell.? :y

i think it means that they have been a cat c write-off by the insurance(uneconomical repair),and have had to be inspected and pass the VIC check. The logbook notes this and the auctioneers have to declare this to keep themselves legally protected. They are legal to buy/sell but it must be declared to any prospectve buyer.

I take it it was a salvage auction? Total loss is normally a cat C or D write-off meaning it can be used for parts only. If the car is ever put back on the road expect very close scrutiny from both the DVLA/VOSA and the police.

Mine was a Cat D. The only damage was some S**T had poured paint stripper over most of the panels, and as a respray cost about £2000, they wrote it off. Nothing mechanical at all, and it aids spotting it in a crowded car park.  ;D

Mine was a totla loss, only damage was  rear bumper and broken light cluster. would have cost £1200+ for the garage to fix it so the insurance company wrote it off.. I bought it back for £110  ::) :y

No, its OK, I bought it like that. The price was about half what one in good nick would have cost at that time. "Cosmetically challanged", yes but a cracking car. I just need some good weather and a big garage to respray her. I got all the paint, the spray guns, the compressor, the air helmet, but the temp has to be about 20deg to spray, and this summer has not really been near that for long enough. I've never sprayed before, but it could be fun  ;D  :y :y :y

Fine, please do. But can you please make sure its a through job, and leave the car nice and smooth. And if you wouldn't mind spraying a quick coat of primer on after, that would be most helpful  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
