Astra 1999 1.6 16V cam belt failure
« on: 08 November 2008, 11:07:56 »

Does anyone no how terminal this will be please, father in laws tensioner has failed at approx 50mph.
I am expecting major valve damage, but is it likely to do anything to vavle guides, head or pistons.

Thanks in advance.

You no what I will be doing for the next week.

Mike

P.S. he is an elderly retired mechanic  and I have told him on more than one occasion to get it changed, but he would not listen, even on trade club a head is £700+.  :(

having done a 1.4 16v that lunched the cam belt at low speed i would say start looking for a s/hand head, it will be cheaper.......

the one that i did lunched all 16 valves and half a dozen guides

because the valves hit the piston at angle they have been known to damage rings due to the valve/piston impact forcing the piston ito the bore, but that is unusual

not a hard job to do though

Thanks chaps, yes that is good value and says it includes gaskets and bolts.
But did wonder if I should buy genuine bolts and gaskets.

The head gasket and bolts will be fine.

I would re-use the old cam seals (pattern are crap) and get genuine cam cover gaskets plus exhaust manifold gasket.
