Diesel

Why does it cost more than petrol?
Surely it requires less refining & is therefore cheaper to produce

THey need to make more Diesel than there is naturally - so it costs more to refine than petrol, of which there is more than demand, so more heavy oils cracked or light oils combined

Whoever told you that, is talking crap!

It used to be the way that diesel was cheaper to refine, as it could be taken out of the process earlier than petrol.

However these days they have to add all kinds of additives  to make it less harmful to the environment, and less smokey.

Have you noticed now that most busses put out hardly any black smoke? The fuel has a lot more stuff in it to prevent the rubbish.

Diesel costs more to refine than petrol.

No THEY don't. Mr. Deisel originally designed his engine to run on vegetable oil. He was forced out by a very threatened oil industry which is why THEY mustn't use the capital "D" when describing it as that would infringe his copyright.

I am thinking of looking into making my own free range diesel from old cooking oil,I can get the oil, its just a matter of how involved it is to filter it etc. so it can go in the car.Its only for a v reg mondeo,so might not be too fussy.

If Diesel was under a quid, I would get a 406 TD Estate...

As it is, nearly as cheap to run the 3.0 on unleaded!

If I could tolerate an estate, I would buy Omegatoy's TD which he keeps threatening to sell - bloody excellent car, took it for a spin earlier.
