We will remember them......
« on: 08 November 2008, 21:26:10 »

Tomorrow is Remembrance Sunday; I`ll be standing, along with many others, at the memorial to the fallen in my local town.
Just a few minutes out of just one day a year; not a lot to ask in return for the lives of freedom we enjoy; all-thanks to the selfless sacrifice of so many brave servicemen.
If you can`t be there to 'remember', do please observe the thoughtful and thankful silence at 11 o`clock.... ;)

Indeed Debs, and war has cost my family as with so many others across the World. :( :(

We will remember them! :'( :'(

In my case in particular:

Pte W. Edwards fell at Ypres (no known grave, lost to the mud) 30th September 1917. :'(

F. Freeman killed by a german bomb dropped by a Heinkel 111 on Tunbridge Wells 12th September 1940 :'(

The death of Wally Edwards badly affected his sister, my Great Aunt, who cherished a picture of him and mourned his loss daily until her death at 95 years of age in 1990. :'(

My Grandmother, the wife of F. Freeman, was so affected by the death of my Grandfather that she died of a broken heart in 1945. :'( and has left my father still heartbroken to this day :'(

I will remember them all as victims of war. :'( :'( :'(

That I hopefully relyed in my post, and yes for all conflicts although thank God my family have been lucky enough not to have lost any more to war since 1945.  However I had a son serve in the Royal Engineers for five years, including Bosnia, and a father 26 years in the Royal Navy to 1966. :y

I doubt there will be many of us who have not been touched with a loss through conflict ofer the last 2 or 3 generations, all who put their lives on the line for us to live in the world we live in today.
God bless them all.

My late father was a lifelong British Legion member, having served in the Royal Artillery in the war, aged just 19.
When he passed away last year, we asked for family flowers only, and any other donations to the RBL benevolent fund. Raised £325 in all.
I used to take him to the Remembrance Day service, held at the local war memorial. Will till be going tomorrow, even though he is not here this year, as a mark of respect for all who have given their lives for this country...
He lost so many mates, some of them youngsters, like he was, 18/19/20 years old.

Very sobering thoughts..

Please dont forget those brave lads and lasses who are still serving on the front line in iraq and and afganistan, they deserve remembering as well as they put their lives on the line , just as did all the other servicemen and women in all the other conflicts in previous times did .My dad did 25 years in the Royal Engineers in the 50's ,60's and 70's , he was lucky he only did active service in NI ,unless you count being in christmas island during the H bomb test's .So please remember the fallen of this great country ,for without them and their comrades we might be speaking german or worse

Sad but true, it appears to be too far back for recent history for the young kids (grandads etc) and not far enough back to be 'history' like Cavaliers and Roundheads and William Wallace etc and the like....
